Ellen Dubin Interview 6/6/2009
Ellen's answers are in red.
In SuperNova you were eating the Divine Predecessors brains, what were they really made out of?
The brains were made of gelatin and strawberry jam.
After a while, they started to make me choke. So all that spitting and gurgling was very realistic because after a few takes, the brains were very unappealing to the taste buds!
Was Giggerota the most loudspoken character that you have played?
Giggerota the Wicked was one of the most larger than life characters I have played. I have played offbeat, quirky characters in my time, but Giggy is the most brassy gal I have tackled. I savored every moment!
If you could have changed anything about Giggy what would it have been?
I would have loved to have had a mate to play with like PRINCE. Can you imagine the two of us together?
What a handsome couple we would make. Yummy!
Apart from Giggy, what other part would you of loved to play in Lexx?
Prince as a female character!
Did you ever feel schizophrenic playing Giggerota, Queen, The Pope, and that real estate agent?
Not at all. The producers and writers of the show were very clever in that the original qualities of Giggerota were also a part of Queen, the real estate agent and the Pope. All were aggressive, offbeat, wild, funny and brash.
When you played Queen in Girltown, how were you able to put up with basically being boiled alive?
That was one of the most difficult shoots I have done in my career. I was in a wet suit with a weighted belt so I wouldn’t bob up and down in the water. My headpiece (although very artistically unique) was too heavy and the black curly wig was very tight. The water was very hot at first and then it got freezing. That tub was in a bunker in Germany that was cold, damp and had rats. Outside there was a huge snow storm. It was so uncomfortable in that vat of water. I didn’t want to leave the tub because I would have gotten so cold and also going to the bathroom would have been a huge problem so I didn’t eat or drink the whole day.
Also a little secret to share, the songs that I sang during the episode, I improvised. I was at that point of such exhaustion, that I had to amuse myself and I was starting to get a little wacky, this nutty side worked very well for Queen! Whoa what a shoot!
Tell us a little bit about your experience filming in Thailand.
Thailand is one of the most incredible places in the world. What a treat to work in a fascinating country. Great food, sweet generous people, and wonderful sites.
We shot the golf sequences in an old temple – so stunning. It had an other worldly atmosphere, one of the highlights of my career. We also bonded so much as a cast there, the gals of the cast toured temples together and markets. We all went out to eat together at night. It was a wonderful combination of work, play and learning.
Tell us the funniest most vivid memory filming in Lexx.
Working with Brian Downey (Stanley Tweedle) was always a joy.
We had so much fun working on scenes. We always made each other laugh. I laugh even as I type this thinking about how I teased him so much in the guise of Giggy. We had a lot of fun on that hand scene where I eat it off and put it on the ship.
Would you have liked for Giggy to have had a love scene on the show, and with which character?
See answer above. Prince Prince Prince!
How do you feel about how the story line of the series wrapped up?
Sad! I never wanted it to end. But I thought the producers did a wonderful job of wrapping up the show.
What was it like working with Geraint Wyn Davies on Forever Knight (twice, no less). Was it fun, at all? I really loved your evil dominatrix character, it was the first time I saw her dressed in leather.
I loved working on FOREVER KNIGHT and I absolutely adore Geraint Wyn Davies- he is sexy funny talented and funny. I actually worked with him THREE times. Twice on FOREVER KNIGHT and once on a show called TRACKER that starred Geraint and Adrian Paul.
I loved playing that dominatrix. That dress was the ultimate- made of rubber not leather. It was so tight, I couldn’t’ even eat a green pea without it showing.
What's to come that we can see in the USA, any idea if The Collector will be shown there?
Believe it or not, there is still talk about bringing THE COLLECTOR to the USA. The DVD of season two will be released shortly in Canada. So cross your fingers for a US airplay. It is airing in 65 countries.
In the meantime, there are several movies on LIFETIME that are airing. I play a US Federal Marshal in ABDUCTED, a good friend in MURDER IN MY HOUSE, and the wise cracking sexy best friend of Molly Ringwald in THE WIVES HE FORGOT. So check your local listings and have fun.
Ellen, you have such a powerful voice when you are called on to project it. I have an inkling you might be able to belt out a song. Do you have some singing talents and credits?
My career started in musical theater; it was a logical segue from dancing to learning how to sing. So I studied with some wonderful singing coaches. I love the feeling of singing on stage. I hadn’t done it in a while but that voice training certainly comes in handy in the sci fi world for these larger than life characters or authority figures. I actually just did a workshop of a new musical here in LA and loved the feeling of being in front of a live audience. Thanks for saying I have a “powerful voice”.
What have you been working on lately?
I am working on a major video game. I am doing some of the voices on this popular game. It is a great field to break into – so many possibilities. I can’t say what it is because you have to sign a waiver to keep silent about it until the game comes out.
I hope to be working on a thriller in the summer.
What character or characters have you yet to play or wanted to?
I am sure there are lots I don’t know about it in the future. I would have loved to have been on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA or the new STAR TREK movie.
I really want to work with the legends like Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorcese and Woody Allen. There’s a set of opposites.
How did you get the role of Gloria in Boeing Boeing?
I had worked with the director on a play a long time ago and we had kept in touch over the years. He phoned me and asked me to do the role it was perfect timing for me – TV and film was slow, I was anxious to get back to the stage and it was a good run of a show near my parents.
BOEING BOEING is a very popular farce and was also on Broadway at the time. I was anxious to do a comedy again!
Also, the fact that Peter Scolari was in it was a huge plus for me.
What was it like working with Peter Scolari and the rest of the cast?
Peter Scolari is a dream. He is a true team player.
He is a lovely kind giving human being and a fabulous comedic actor.
Our major scene together was a tour de force piece of comedy. I would work with him in a heartbeat.
Brilliant and amazing!
How was it running around in those high, high red heels?
You have to remember that I am a five foot ten and a half inch actress with those four inch stilettos I was over about six feet two. So I towered over Peter Scolari. He came up to my chest. Ok, you get the picture.
When you are doing the show, your adrenaline carries you through. I am contorting, running, jumping and moving very quickly. After the show, however, you are in real pain and have to ice and rest until the next performance.
I am still having hip, neck and back issues.
But it is all worth it to get an audience to laugh!
I heard you were working on an animated series. I'm curious what kind of character you are voicing. Is your character anything like Giggy, Queen, or Pope?
Yes, the show is called N Guard: Defenders of Gaia. I would play a character that is part spider/ part woman. So I am sure the voice would be a lower seductive type. It would depend on what the production team required once the show gets rolling. I am so excited about the possibilities of this show based on a comic.
What is the most ridiculous thing you’ve been asked to do for a role, and did you do it?
I was asked to wear a two hundred pound fat suit,
be covered from head to toe with hair. Have a prosthetic face covered with hair, have huge oversized hairy feet, be blind in both eyes, have four arms – two that were like puppets on a string and were very heavy.
I would also have to have a hose in my back on breaks during the shoot to cool down to prevent fainting and eat thru a toothpick that was fed to me by a crew member. I also had to move gracefully like a ballet dancer in this get up and helped around the set by two crew members. The makeup would take over four hours to put on and hours to take off gently.
YES I DID IT, IT WAS THE TOUGHEST SHOOT OF MY LIFE!
What a nut I was!
Any new convention plans coming up?
No plans for now. Maybe next year.
If you were offered a series in the U.S. would you relocate for it?
I do live in the US. I am typing the responses to this email from Los Angeles. I divide my time between Toronto and Los Angeles. My motto is: Have suitcase will travel.
You have to be flexible as an actor to go where the work is.
I would do a series in the US in a heartbeat!
YES YES YES !
Are you married, and do you have any children?
Do you like sports, if so what kind?
Love watching, gymnastics and skating at the Olympics. And in person, I don’t go often, love the excitement of basketball and hockey.
What is your favorite guilty pleasure?
Chocolate and American Idol!
What is your favorite activity for a rainy day?
What are your hobbies, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with my family. I am on the road so much, so that to me is my favorite thing.
I also like seeing friends and going out for dinner and seeing films and television.
I am also the spokesperson for the MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION in Toronto and Central Ontario. Very important to take care of these kids!
Who is your biggest influence as an actress?
I have two. My mother’s devotion passion and unending hard work inspire me and my ballet teacher for telling me that I had great drama and comedy abilities as a dancer and that would make me a wonderful actress.
Lastly, is there anything you would like to say your loyal Lexx fans?

|This is great! Thanks for sharing with us, FooFoo, you're a gem.
It's interesting that Ms. Dubin also finds Mr. Wyn-Davies funny, sexy and great to work with, as others have reported. I'm glad she had a good time with him. He seems like he'd be great to work with. I envy her.

|What a great interview! She rocks! I loved her in all her incarnations of Giggerota! I've got to check out those Lifetime movies she mentioned. Thanks for posting this!
|Awesome interview! Thanks Angel and thank you Ellen! I can't imagine working with both Geraint Wyn Davies and Adrian Paul. I'll have to check out TRACKER. I think that Giggy and Prince as a couple would have kept enough fireworks going to have an entire series of their own :FW3:
|Thanks to Angel and Ellen for taking the time out for us fans.
She's such a lovely lady.
Lastly they are making a sequel trek movie that would be so cool if you could be in it:-)
