Perfect role for Depp. He kind of reminds me of that Edward Scissorhands with all the pale make up.

Probably an unpopular opinion but Jonathan Frid The original Barnabas Collins)is probably spinning in his grave at the comedic mess made of a suspensful and yes shiver inducing creepy series. Even the remake starring Ben Cross as Banabas respected what Dark Shadows was at it's core.

What Tim Burton has done with it is a travesty to my mind being a long time fan of the original series. I was even able to tolerate the remake because it did respect the Dark Shadows franchise.

I was talking to Maya about this earlier in the week and she said the EXACT same thing you're saying Abby, that alot of the fans of the original series are going to be outraged that this was made into a comedy and not respecting the original series.

I was outraged at the 21 Jump Street movie for the same reason.

This is like making a movie and calling it Lexx but turning it all Star Trek-y; Kai wanting to be more alive ala Data, Stan acting like a Benjamin Sisco and Xev being all Seven of Nine.

Like I said Hollywood wouldn't know an original idea if it jumped up and bit them on the ass.  I was happy when I first heard they were making a movie with Johnny Depp because he would have been a perfect brooding Barnabas Collins, instead he's Jack Sparrow with a blood fetish.

I dare anyone to watch the original with Jonathan Frid or the remake with Ben Cross and tell me this is Dark Shadows.  This has nothing to do with Dark Shadows.

Creative rewriting, moral realignment and genre shifts are a GREAT thing. :-)

If it is handled well...

But from what I've heard, Dark Shadows is not much fun - which is probably a much more serious crime than not respecting the genre of the original. I'm going to give it a shot, but ever since Sweeney Todd, I've been rather worried about Tim.

I think I'll watch 21 Jump Street first...

What was really tragic was that Jonathan Frid died just shortly before the movie opened and it left me feeling as if he got a raw deal on how his character was portrayed in this silly remake. If Burton had done it straight drama or they'd used someone like Alfonso Cuaron to direct would have been in better taste. This one just lool like a sad remake of the Munsters...

I don't think Jonathan Frid would have appreciated what was done with Barnabas either, The truly sad thing is that Johnny could have played that role seriously and truly honored what Frid had done.

I have to say though calling it a sad remake of the Munsters seems to be an insult to the Munsters.  Now you've got Fred Gwynne spinning in his grave too!
