I saw a really awesome movie last night (on DVD). Peaceful Warrior It stars Scott Mechlowicz, Nick Nolte, & Amy Smart. It's based on a true story by Dan Millman. It's a great Drama/Sport/Spiritual movie. I give it 5 robot heads

My expectations were high. Almost unreasonably so. Fortunately, the film was just as good as I had hoped, if not even better. "Last Hurrah" was one of those movies I had fallen in love with before I saw them (John Woo AND Wei Pai and a lot of swordplay and of homosocial bonding - the reasons are really quite obvious). It's great not to be disappointed.

OMG you do NOT have that on DVD. I bought that from Tai Seng about 5 years ago when they finally remastered it from the Japanese print and it's undoubtedly John Woo's finest swordplay flick ever. Hey did you ever notice that Woo really doesn't like female characters? He always portrays them as traitorous or weak in some way and is WAY more into the male-bonding issues between the protagonists. If you like that one, make sure you get 'Duel to the Death' as well. Chinese and Japanese sword masters square off in a magnificent duel on a high cliff. Stunning.
AYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH !!

Y'know, people kept telling me "if you're a Wei Pai fan, this is a must see, especially if you liked Hard Boiled, Killer and other Woo's heroic bloodshed stuff" and from clips on youtube and pics and reviews it seemed they were all pretty damn right, so I ordered that lovely Dragon Dynasty DVD + a DVD of Have Sword, Will Travel and as far as I'm concerned, Christmas need not be this year...;-)
Ordered a copy of Cheeky Chap and Phantom Killer, too. In our neck of the woods, they're not easy to get. My expectations are not that high this time, but I'm quite looking forward to getting that package from DDDhouse. This Wei Pai fetish costs me money, dammit.
I saw Duel to the Death some time ago and loved pretty much everything about it, except the finale...
And yeah, as for Woo's women... They do rather tend to "stand in the way" don't they...;-) I am not sure if he likes them or not (I sure hope he holds no grudges against us...;-)), but he's not that keen on writing them... Or not good at it. Or both...
Very Chang Cheh in this respect... (I just won't forget that moment from "New One-Armed Swordsman" with Li Ching happily and gratefully grabbing David Chiang's empty sleeve, while he affectionately puts his one arm round Ti Lung's shoulders... Well, I can understand that I guess - if I had just one arm I'd probably go for Ti Lung, too - though Li Ching was quite a hottie...:icon_twisted

Yeah, John Woo's lack of ability to write a good female role hasn't kept me from enjoying his films, especially the Heroic bloodshed types of films. Oh did you know they just made a video game based on 'Hard Boiled', with images taken from Replacement Killers, starring Chow-Yun Fat? Fantastic.
I still have an original Criterion 'Killers' and 'Hard Boiled' on dvd, I hear they're going for over $250 now..

Yeah... Interesting female characters are fine but interesting male characters are better...:icon_twisted:
I think I've heard about the game you mention. I'd love to try it out, but I doubt I've got the hardware it needs...
Oh... As for my Wei Pai fetish... :icon_twisted:
In the end, I was pleasantly surprised by Cheeky Chap and not disappointed by Phantom Killer. Those movies are in the "just slightly above average" league, IMHO, but entertaining enough - and some of the fights were really superb.
Quite a pity that the guy just disappeared the way he did...

Aww, lucky you...;-)

Finally saw Sunshine. Wonderfully ambient movie. Far from flawless... If I wanted to list all its flaws, I would end up writing a rather lengthy post... But it was in its own flawed way so damn beautiful that I couldn't care less about those flaws...;-)
By the way, Hiroyuki Sanada really is the man. (...haven't witnessed such a screen-dominating presence ever since I watched Lam Ching-Ying steal the whole Bai ga jai movie...:-)) He made much of the second half of Sunshine seem almost anticlimactic...:-)))
That movie is really something.

I got the third Pirates Of The Caribbean, At World's End. It was much better then I thought it was going to be.
I loved the bit with all the Captain Jack Sparrows in it, lol. That was one of my best Christmas present

It's a great movie! I saw it in the theater. I still have to have Christmas with a friend of mine and I did ask for that for a Christmas present, so I hope that's one of the things I'm getting.

I watched Kill Bill 2 last night. It was really cool movie. I do like that actress Uma Thurman.
I loved the bit were she was frighting the bitch with patch on her her eye Elle and then took her other eye out, what good revenge. I did find that funny too, I'm strange, lol.

The bitch with the patch on her eye was none other than Daryl Hannah, the crazy blonde android Replicant Pris from Blade Runner....cool eh?

Yeah I knew her name was Daryl Hannah, but I did not realize she was the blond in Blade Runner, another excellent movie which I have.
Remember when she played a Mermaid in Slash.
