My 2 Cents on Episode 2.14: Patches in the Sky

Gotta make this quick...Woz is starting soon.

This was another all-around solid episode: it told an intriguing story, helped to further flesh out the main characters, gave us our first past-season cameo, and furthered the overall season 2 story arc. Of course this one scores extra points with us Stan fans, as this is yet another ep in which the beans peel a layer of rind from Stan’s long-abused psyche and give us a glimpse at what makes him tick. I actually saw a few minutes of this ep about two years ago, and while I didn’t quite understand all of it at the time, it held my interest, and convinced me to tune in to the next show, which ultimately sucked me in for good.

You know, with a couple of exceptions, this episode had the look and feel of a season 3 ep. I can’t quite place it: perhaps it was the gritty lighting, or the darker, less silly (by highly subjective standards) supporting characters, or the overall seriousness of the episode (this one was light on the slapstick...Paul must have sent Jeff and Lex on a snipe hunt before shooting began). Whatever the reason, it’s a nice little taste of things to come.

Gubby Mok. An affable chap who won me over from the get go. Kind of came across as a demented Willie Wonka. I had to laugh at the scene where he shot down all of Fruitcake’s (great name) attempts at barter, only to give in because he couldn’t stand to see a grown man cry.

The narcolounger was an interesting concept, but it got me to thinking: was this ep originally produced before or after the Matrix came out? If it’s after, then it could be argued that this ep pays tribute to the Matrix (or any one of the litany of films/books/anime that the Wachowski’s borrowed from), but if it came out before, then that means the film’s producers are closet Lexxians! Anyone who knows for certain, please drop me a line.

Upon first glimpsing into Stan’s dream, we pretty much saw what we expected...Lyekka, Xev, a gaggle of other women…not terribly creative, but look who we’re dealing with here. For my money I would have thought that Stan would dream of them in a different capacity (as would most Lexxians…the ones who aren’t hung up on Kai that is [I think you gals outnumber us on a grand scale]), as opposed to just floating around. Who knows, maybe I missed a whole mess of Freudian symbolism...that can happen when your favorite show comes on at midnight. Hell, at this point, Stan should count his lucky stars that Feppo and Smoor did not pop up with one of their overgrown vibrating augers.

One would think that Lexx would know the meaning of such a simple command as "cancel." Then again, the Lexx was built for HDS, and since he wanted to wipe out virtually everything, I highly doubt he anticipated changing his mind. Still, I like how they tied the robot from the doomed mining planet (face it...he needed him some killin’) into Stan’s nightmare. I got a chuckle out of seeing the robot fire little Lexx-like bolts at our unjustly maligned captain.

Giggerotta is back!!! Her wisecracking cannibal character is strangely likable, despite being absolutely insane (which would put her firmly in the majority). Kind of like a smart-assed version of Hannibal Lecter, if you will. I like how she delved into Stan’s mind, playing off an all-too-common theme that has already been explored in Stan’s Trial: his fear of death. I also thought it was extremely intriguing when they discussed what is on the "other side," as we will come to know the answer in time. It’s also interesting to note that, as far as I can tell, had Stan perished in his dream he would have gone to Water.

Gubby, after reenacting various Cheech-and-Chong-like skits, had one of the more interesting death scenes that I’ve seen on the show. Kind of brings new meaning to the phrase: "Your ass is grass and I’m gonna smoke it." (Say NO to drugs)

Poor Fruitcake. Cut down in the prime of life (btw, did you all catch Stan’s reaction to popping up in his dream...priceless). Oh well, at least he died doing what he loved...getting smashed by a free-floating mechanical arm.

Though it is never stated outright, we all know what the patches in the sky are. This episode is almost apocalyptic, in the sense that it shows the full extent of Mantrid’s power, and serves to drive home the fact that there’s no stopping him. I can only imagine what it must have been like to see this as a first timer. I know I’d be on the edge of my seat.

Well, I’d love to write more, but it’s nearly time for Woz, an ep that holds a special place in my heart. We’re entering the endgame as far as season 2 is concerned, and from what I’ve seen so far, it’s been a heck of a ride.

Cheery bye.

If you're normal, the crowd will accept you. But if you're deranged, the crowd will make you their leader.

Patches contains probably one of the best dialogues

Gubby: "You wanna blast?" (to Kai)
Kai: "No. Dead cannot get high."
