This story is just too short to include in my fan-fic eZine. but I thought you guys might like it Lexx fans know that Brizon and Mantrid had an unpleasant history but what was that history?  Well here is the story from four different points of view; Brizon’s,  Mantrid’s , His Divine Shadow’s and Kai’s.

Brizon

When His Divine Shadow called me to him and told me of my appointment, I was thrilled!  Supreme Biovizier! Of course this meant responsibilities including the creation of new weapons and punishments for HDS’ use.  I will admit to being a somewhat ambitious man and I immediately began looking for an assistant who possessed ambition also.  This is what led me to Mantrid, I did not realize at the time that his ambition was so all consuming as to be a dangerous obsession.
In the beginning we worked together.   I shared my ideas with him and we worked to improve them.  We also began working on improving the programming of the Divine Assassins.  There was one assassin, Kai which was off limits to the other bioviziers.  Kai was ruthless, more so than the others and unexpectedly difficult to deal with.  HDS believed that Kai’s reluctance to follow orders made him more ruthless when he did follow orders.  Only I and my assistant Mantrid were allowed to work on his programming.
It was several years before I began to realize my mistake in choosing Mantrid.  It was a very small thing that tipped me off, a simple mind control drug that was designed to be administered to heretics.  The aim was to easily discover information from them.  Mantrid had presented this drug to HDS as his own discovery.  Over the next months more and more of my research was being presented to HDS.  This is when I realized that Mantid sought to usurp my position.
I had kept some things from Mantrid and good that I had.  He had only the barest information on my research into creating a permanent body for HDS and no information whatsoever on the research I had been doing on a final overwrite program for the Divine Assassins.  I saw the writing on the wall.  HDS was reluctant to grant me an audience,  and he displayed a lack of patience when he did agree to see me.  Within a year HDS requested that I retire.  Knowing the consequences if I had refused, I bowed to his wishes.
While it gave Mantrid what he wanted, me out of the picture; it also meant that I was no longer at hand for him to steal my ideas and research!  He did not bring a single new idea to His Divine Shadow after my ouster!
In a way the retirement was a blessing.  I was able to finish the programming for the Divine Assassins, it wiped all previous programming from the assassin’s mind leaving only memories.  It also allowed me to work full time on the project to create HDS a mechanical body.  I would have taken that research to HDS and gotten my appointment back, but the Divine Order fell at the hands of Kai before I could do so.

Mantrid

Brizon was nothing more than an old fool!  He could have had such power!  He could have had the Divine Order at his feet but he did not have the guts to do so.  I am not so foolish.
I soon realized that he would go no farther than where he was.  So I learned of his research and refined it.  I improved it and made it mine! Then I took it to His Divine Shadow.  I let His Shadow see my brilliance!
It did not take long for HDS to discover who was the real biovizier.  HDS realized that I would do whatever needed to be done without Brizon’s squeamishness.  Brizon the old fool was forced into retirement and I was appointed Supreme Biovizier.
I improved all of The Divine Order’s weapon’s.  I took over the Lexx Project.  I implemented it.  The old fool Brizon was concerned with the resources of the protein bank.  It was easy enough to increase deposits.  I started with all those bioviziers loyal to Brizon.  Then all the fools who dared to whisper about that Brunnen G prophecy.  The Brunnen G were destroyed, all but one and he was a mindless tool of the Order.
My mistake was in openly suggesting that some of the loyal followers of HDS be sent to the protein bank, I should have been more subtle.  They found out about some experiments that I had been doing and reported it to His Shadow as a basis to have me removed.  I was exiled for being too dangerous but His Shadow did not send me to the protein bank.  He kept me alive so he could use my knowledge.  That is what annoyed Brizon the most.  I was exiled but still was available to His Shadow.  The old fool never took advantage of my exile either, because he was afraid of my connection to His Shadow!

His Divine Shadow
Brizon and Mantrid?  That was a rare miscalculation on my part, one that was quickly corrected.  Brizon was brilliant but he was too particular.  He spent too much time on research.  I would have been a predecessor by the time he brought anything to me.  I needed results. That is why I requested Brizon’s resignation.  Of course Brizon should have been sent to the protein Bank, but I was not so blind as to not realize that most of what Mantrid brought to me was originally the work of Brizon.
Mantrid did sent Kai after Brizon, Kai returned and reported his mission to me.  It is impossible for a Divine Assassin to override orders that had come from me, and receiving an order from my Supreme Biovizier was the same as receiving an order from me.  I canceled the order and spoke to Mantrid assuring him that Brizon was dead.  I knew that Brizon could still be of some use.
I had thought that Mantrid would produce results and he did in the beginning, it soon became apparent that his brilliance was non existent.  Eventually his work began falter, what he brought to me was of less and less value.
I did not realize the goal of his ambition when I first appointed him.  His first act was to remove all those who had been under Brizon’s direction.  It was a regrettable mistake, he destroyed all access to Brizon’s research.   His next mistake was to target those directly under my command.  It revealed the depth of his ambition.  This left me with a dilemma.
Knowing that Mantrid’s work was all based on Brizon’s research sending a Divine Assassin to kill him would have been a waste.  Instead I turned the matter over to my personal forces.  They took him away and imprisoned him far away from The Cluster but close enough to keep an eye on.
It is ironic that they both outlived me and that in the end Mantrid achieved his goal only to be defeated by my personal assassin Kai.

Kai

Although I was not in control of my actions I do remember them.  I can remember being given orders by officers of His Divine Shadow.  Sometimes  I followed them and other times I did not.  I had no understanding of why I could often refuse the orders of underlings.  I could not refuse the orders of Divine Shadow.
The first time my programming was changed was by Brizon.  The programming rendered me physically incapable of harming any current or former Supreme Biovizier, it is the same program that was used on the LEXX to prevent it from attacking His Shadows personal forces.
The second time my programming was changed was by Mantrid.  He programmed me to accept all orders from Supreme Bioviziers as if they came from His Divine Shadow himself.
These new programs did not interfere with me following orders as given to me by Divine Shadow.  Then Divine Shadow gave me a permanent order.  I was ordered to determine the best way to fill the orders given to me.  I do not think that anything would have come of the situation if Mantrid had not sent me to kill Brizon.
I arrived at Brizon’s home fully intending to carry out my orders only to find that I could not.  I was completely inoperative as I assessed my options, it was Brizon who told me how to carry out my orders without killing him.  All I had to do was report the mission to Divine Shadow and lie to Brizon since Divine Shadow was unaware of the order.
I returned to The Cluster and reported to His Shadow who countermanded the order.  It was His Shadow who spoke the lie to Mantrid.  Neither Brizon nor Mantrid had thought to include His Divine Shadow in the list of who I could not kill.  It is why I was able to kill His Shadow when I regained my memory and free will.
In the end His Shadow attempted to use them both and failed.  And they both failed in their ambitions.

Full disclosure: The entire time I was reading this I was picturing the various characters on a Lexx-themed episode of Behind the Music (...is that show even around anymore?)

Some interesting insights, which could easily be nudged into the canon.  Not sure why, but for some reason I found myself wishing I could see the four characters' stories play out in comic book form.

Here's a thought: we know that Kai is essentially incapable of lying (and indeed, would have no reason to in this setting), but what about the others?  I can't help but picture one of those scenarios where the voice-over narrator is telling one story, while the actions on screen contradict his account in some way.  Certainly wouldn't put it past Brizon or Mantrid to crank the spin machine up to full blast.

Would love to see you flesh out what you've written here in the future, and maybe take it a level deeper.

I've got this one on tap for the future to go back and get a little deeper with it.  I've been trying to finish the sixth cycle of time but I'm planning to go back once I finish and re write the cycles from the insect point of view.  Which would definitely call from some serious delving into the rise of the Divine Order!

Between Brizon and Mantrid, one of them (Mantrid) was obviously 'out of favor' during the reign of HDS, and Brizon managed to escape retribution after HDS was destroyed...but he's still out there wreaking havoc in his own way. I think he welcomed his interaction with Mantrid, simply because he was the only one capable of dealing with him on his own level. Both were diabolical geniuses and had huge egos, but Brizon's mantra..."Genius is simply the art of planning ahead"..will go down in Lexx history as the best slogan EVER !!! It also explains why Brizon managed to escape and blaze through the Dark universe after Mantrid was imprisoned.

The whole exchange between Brizon and Mantrid reminded me of ghetto kids throwing snaps at each other.

Okay the Insect Side of the story is on it's way.  Starting on Saturday I will be publishing it.  Seems the insects had an understandable reason for targeting humanity!
