Hi. My life is in turmoil at the moment. Of course, anyone can start one of these rewatch threads. So, don't wait for me.

I had a similar double-take with this episode as with the last. I didn't realize before that the goings on in the memory chambers have partly to do with the Poetry man going nuts.

So, we don't really get to see what the followers of his shadow were like prior to a corrupted personification of him. And, we don't get to see what Brunis was like before a crazed poet man, aside from the play, brigadoom.

Also, I thought Kai was unusually emotional, e.g. putting his arm around Zev. But, then I remembered there is something odd about Kai, that we learn about after this episode.

We learn that Zev was given up by her parents.

Giggerota has a snake in her mouth. Is it the same kind of snake that we see in the next episode?

The memory chambers, and the music remind me of the cloister of trials in Final Fantasy 10.

I love various quotes:

Jigger oughta: Metal head!
790: Leather ass!

Distraught Giggerota:

"No good. Too salty!"

There is also the kiss:

And the planet of milk fed boys:

There is also the shower scene. Zev's body is very nice to look at... I wonder if I detect Eva Haberman feeling uncomfortable while she says her lines to Stan: "I am a white hot volcano of desire", etc. The delivery seems pained, maybe.

Kai looks so young. Ellen Dubin looks so cute.

The suns being sentient and super-novaing together is interesting. I enjoyed the book Whipping star, about sentient suns.

Kai didn't remember being told about Blue Star as a child. It was obviously there to bring Kai back together and it was sentient, but it was never explained. Unless I missed it whilst drooling......

What gets me is the conflicting 'feel' of Brunnis. Okay it's an ancient ruin of a highly advanced civilization but the architecture is more in keeping with an actual ancient civilization like Egypt or Rome. Where is all the technology? Oh yeah the solar stabilizers. Even the library looks more like a place you would find Indiana Jones hunting relics than the home of an advanced space-faring people.

Then there's the fashion. No offense to the real living Kai but the man looks like a peacock on steroids. Even Rainbow Brite would advise a little less color, and don't get me started on the hair! Then we get the totally conflicting example of men's fashion on Brunnis thanks to Poetman and he looks like he stepped off the cover of Runaway Groom Magazine.

The whole thing just feels so disjointed and out of whack but I think that is what works for me.
The whole out of sync 'feel' of Brunnis. It's just out of sync with everything!

My guess is, because of the intense isolation of Brunnis2, the population has expressed it's increasingly limited creativity in the only avenue open to them, by way of personal grooming. When you live underground, things don't advance and change much, so the fashions evolve to a more complicated state. Plus it's obviously more visually stimulating in a enclosed environment.

Yes but when you look at Brigadoom the women look more like Plain Janes it was only the younger males that had the Rainbow Brite thing going on, and Kai was the Brightest of the bunch!

Hmmm...That's pretty much the norm in Earth's animal kingdom too! The brightest most colorful gaudy males get the female. Was Kai doing the whole male mating display thing:bigthink:
Now that I think about it, males in the animal kingdom sing and dance too!:c030a:

Well you never know, the rainbow images might have had something to do with local rank, after all, military men wear brightly colored ribbons on their chests denoting rank, achievement, etc, and call them 'salads'..

The women's hair looked pretty complicated, but the dresses more monochromatic, while Kai's outfit was WAY more intricate than the other men's clothes. It could be a sign of social status, etc. He was seen as a kind of leader...

Tonight on Animal Planet the Mating cycle of the Brunnen-G!

Jeff Corwin: The more colors the male can incorporate into his plumage, the more females he can mate with. Notice how colorful the Dominant Male of the pack is. It's rare to see a full on mating display of this magnitude as these elusive creatures are usually hiding underground....

And the blush made Kai so pretty! :D :kai-red:

But seriously, I think the extreme costumes and hair showed an advanced civilization at the height of its decadence and about ready to fall into decline. If you look at cultures from Earth's past, it's always when they become uber decadent that they crumble in on themselves.

Personally, I like Kai's clothes and hair (yes, even the rainbow brite outfit) because they're so whacked out. I can't remember the last time I saw something like that and thought wow, I've never seen that before. Totally weird, and totally unique. And I've always attributed the more subdued look of the other Brunnen-G to a low budget and hurried shooting schedule. Wasn't Kai's outfit made long before for IWHS? Maybe they didn't have enough time/budget to make the other outfits as elaborate. But I agree about Poet Man. Why does he look like a lounge singer?

CheshireKat owns the rainbow suit, she bought it on ebay from figdress. It is beautiful in person, very elaborate detail work. The colors remind me of an easter egg basket.

I didn't say the costume wasn't pretty but as my mom used to say it's so 'busy' you get tired just looking at it.

As for Poetman, maybe TC had the old butler's costume from Clue hanging in the back of his closet?

I assumed the same thing, Maya.  I always attributed Kai's more colorful/elaborate costume to his rank or social status.

I'm also quite fond of the "rainbow brite" look. :kai-red: LOL  I know, I know - I'm in the minority... I also prefer Xev over Zev.  I like both versions, of course, but Xev seemed more "lively" to me... Maybe because I always felt Xenia was a better actress than Eva. Sometimes Eva's performance seems forced, if that makes any sense.

BTW... I'm with you guys on the issue of Tim Curry's costume.  It would have made more sense to me if his attire was more in keeping with the traditional Brunnen-G clothing.  I remember that I was a bit confused about his character the first time I saw Super Nova.

Oh, and how lucky is CheshireCat to have that lovely rainbow costume!!!  I'm green with envy right now...

Actually the clothing of Brunnis one would have been the 'traditional' clothing. Meaning if they stuck to traditional clothing, Kai would have looked like a runaway groom too!

The hologram lady had Brunnen-G clothing and hair, and so did the people in the flashbacks Stan sees in the memory catacombs. For whatever reason, only Poet Man gets to wear basic black. :)
