As you lot on here already know, the whole back story of Lexx, despite all its brilliant wackiness, is all about Kai and I've always thought that his story is THE saddest I've ever come across.

He leads a attempt to save his planet from His Divine Shadow, obviously knowing it was futile, but still he doesn't give up. Gets to see his planet and all his race destroyed, then sacrifices himself in a vain attempt to kill HDS and ends up being killed by him, having his essence taken and then meddled with by the bio-engineers and re-animated into a killing machine for the soul use of his murderer for thousands of years.

He gets his memories back and finally defeats his nemisis, but he's still dead.

He finds friends and has a beautiful, brave woman fall in love with him, but he's still dead and cannot properly reciprocate.

He meets Prince, who, as it turns out, has the power to grant him life again.

At this point we should all be rejoicing! But no, the powers that be decide that Prince will grant Kai life, just as he is about to fly into a huge meteor carrying a big bomb with him in order to save his friends.

How tragic is that?

I've never come across a story as sad as the story of Kai.

Has anyone else?

He's definitely a tragic hero. I kind of thought that there had to be some purpose behind his whole existence and that is what my fanfiction is about. The first one I ever wrote was a back story on Kai and who/what he really is. And that on has spun off into four more fan fics, one is complete the second one is a series I'm publishing in my eZine. I've also started working out the preliminary time line on the third because they are all spun off from the Prophecy and Time story.

You can take a look at the first one here

There are some really good writers on this board, Angel and Ketana have written dozens of fics, back in the day. Angel has saved some of them, I only wrote a handful, but there's always room for more creativity.

The character of Kai fits a Destroyer/Messiah archetype that is inherent in alot of religions through history. Paul may have used it as a springboard, but Michael has a whole different take on the role of Kai in the ongoing story of Lexx.

Interesting. So what is Michael's take on Kai's role?
Personally, his story breaks my heart.

I've always felt that Kai was one of the most tragically beautiful characters ever created (due in large part to Michael's exquisite portrayal), and not just in the world of scifi, either. For me, Lexx truly is the story of Kai. I do get quite annoyed with people who write off Lexx as being goofy or irrelevant.

I'm also a big Doctor Who fan, and I see so many parallels between the Doctor (Last of the Time Lords) and Kai (Last of the Brunnen-G). When you really look at their stories, they're both tragic heroes who sacrifice all to save their friends and the universe as a whole - at great personal cost. But, of course, so many people write off Doctor Who as simply a "kid's show."

I wish more folks could look beyond the surface, ya know?

Anyway... I'm going to have to check out some of the fan fiction you guys have written. It's nice to know fans who appreciate the greatness of Lexx... and especially that of Kai.

I'm sure some of you have seen this already, but I love this interview with Michael...

I agree that Michael brought a great depth and meaning to the role and made the story of Kai even more heart breaking!
There are many parallels with The Doctor but his story is one of choice. Kai had that option taken away from him.
The new generation of Dr Who stories are certainly not just for kids! Russell T Davies and Stephen Moffat have brought the Dr to the masses with brilliant writing and great performances by Chris Eccleston and the wonderful David Tennant. I shall check out the link (again!) when I'm online.

We really saw the horror that was done to Kai in K-Town. That really brought home the travesty the bio-visiers had done to him.

Michael's portrayal of Kai really made the character. It was different to see this type of character played as so 'accepting' of what was literally a fate worse than death. It made Kai into a much stronger character for me than Spock or Data who were both consistently trying to become what they were not.

For me strongest strongest Kai moments are when you get that teasing glimpse of what he was in life.

In Stan's Trial when he is arguing for Stanley's quick death and Jihana (sp) questions his right to speak for the dead.
In Twilight when he's scampering around reciting Nursery rhymes and poetry.
In Gigashadow any of the scenes with him and Squish.

You get a glimpse of the person Kai must have been in life but you never get the sense that he resents what he is and what he has lost. That 'resentment' is there in both Spock and Data.

Kai is definitely a role that a lesser actor could not have pulled off.  It's a testament to Michael's talent that the 'humanity' in Kai comes through and I imagine playing a role like that is a fine line to walk.  How do you make an audience feel for a character who cannot feel?  It was an impressive feat, that's for sure.

Kai is a unique character. There was never any 'development' Kai just was. He didn't suddenly start expressing a desire to be alive. The Kai you met in I worship his shadow was the same Kai you said goodbye to in Yo way yo. He wasn't more developed, one step closer to being human etc.

That is a great video, if  you have the Season 4 dvds, it's an extra on there.

If you want to read what Michael had to say about the part of Kai as Martyr, etc, check out this interview we did not too long ago..

Sadly, I don't have season 3 or 4 on DVD yet.  I've been unemployed since 4/09, so my spending habits have been a bit.... stifled.  That being said, they're on my Christmas wishlist!  I was able to snag that video off YouTube, though.  I probably watch it more than I should...  LOL

I've read that interview with Michael from 2009 - it's one of my favorites.  :D

I totally agree. I think that is why we all really FELT for him. He wasn't alway cold and detached (like Spock) and he certainly wasn't robotic (like Data) we did see glimpses of the alive Kia and we also saw that he did have emotions.

Michael did such a stirling job of showing so much on his face . His expression when Zev dies in "Terminal" is totally amazing.

That is why his story is so tragic. even though he accepts that he is dead and doesn't want to be alive. He does have emotions. He's emotionally attached to Xev and to Stan. He even showed his parental side with "Squish"!

I always felt that Kai, rather than being devoid of emotion, always tried to keep his emotions at bay, because he was dead.

Michael's take that Kai played the role of the mandatory Autistic character, I think is flawed. Autistic people are withdrawn and detached from interaction with people and the world. Kai wasn't.

I think that Kai has to be completely cut off from his emotions even if he can still remember them. It would have been a survival mechanism. It was probably one of the things the The biovizirs did to the assassins. Many of those turned over to the Bioscholars probably had a strong sense of honor etc and would have fought carrying out the assassinations.

If the assassins had their emotions intact and could feel, the moment Kai regained his memory he would have had a complete psychotic break trying to deal with thousands of years of guilt. Yet he does not. He refuses to kill for His shadow and instead challenges his shadow.

He even continues to kill although now with the justification of 'protecting' Stanley and Xev. He also lets us know in Stan's trial he would deliberately kill Stanley in the blink of an eye. And this is After he almost kills him by accident in terminal.

I think its a case of having memories of emotion than any capability of feeling/experiencing emotion itself.

I enjoy Star Trek (it's nowhere near the same league as Lexx, of course), but I could NEVER feel any connection to Spock or Data. Even with Spock being half human... and Data's pursuit of his 'humanity' got tiresome. I just couldn't relate to either of them on any level, but Kai - well, that's a different story! I imagine a psychiatrist would have a field day with my empathy for a dead assassin with no feelings... ;o)

I agree with you guys when you say he probably did have emotions, but he was detached from them - whether by his own design or through the intervention of the bio-viziers.

Going back to Michael's performance, I agree that you really can see the struggle on Kai's face sometimes - even if it just flashes by for a second. He could do so much with his eyes!

I could talk about Kai all day. :o)

There are a ton of interviews and documentaries up at the MM.com Video page, and you can download them to your own computer. Here's the link:

http://www.michael-mcmanus.com/video2.htm

Alot of these are rare and now out of print in any format, so you can at least save them for viewing later.

Thanks Maya! I've downloaded everything I can get my hands on. MM.com is a GREAT resource!

None of my friends ever watched Lexx... so I've never talked to anyone about Kai. Nice to finally meet some kindred spirits!

I've been busy posting whatever YouTube videos I can to my Facebook page. I know I've gotten some people to watch Doctor Who and Supernatural via my postings, so maybe I can get some new fans for Lexx.... and Kai!

I know for a fact that the videos I've posted have reminded some of my Facebook friends who used to watch the show, so hopefully they'll go back and re-watch it at some point. Lexx deserves more attention than it gets.

I've done exactly the same on FB. Some of the fan vids are totally brilliant with some great music. My favourite is the "Angel" one, can't quite put my finger on why......

I think we should start a campaign to get Lexx aired again on a popular channel and at a reasonable time.

OMGosh!  The 'Angel" video is my favorite, too!   And, no... I can't imagine why, either....  ;o)

This is another good one, which I'm sure you've seen but it's worth another viewing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpT0KqHnt2A

As far as I can tell, Lexx isn't being shown anywhere in the US right now... which is a travesty!  Where are you, Jen?

I'm in the UK.
That vid is really good and very professionally done.

These two bring me to tears and really sum up just how sad Kai's story is and how sad Xev's is (she did love him)

He really was a true hero.

The guy that made that, his real name is Matt, did that one especially at my request.  I don't have the programs to make a video and we were talking one day and I said I've always wanted one done with that 'Broken' by Seeter,  because I thought it fit Kai's character so well and also the unrequited love that Xev has for him, and voila he did one, and I absolutely love it!

though you do come out ahead, so to speak.  you only have a small clutch of middle aged women to fight off.  I have several galaxies worth of vigorous youngsters (plus the disturbingly large number of elderly spock fanciers) to crash tackle before I can meld front bottoms with mister serious :(

After Kai and I celebrate my victory, I will help you fight off those pesky Spock fanciers, if you like.  I own several lightsabers - I'm sure they'll come in handy.

You don't have to fight me off. I'll happily hand him over in about 50 years when I'm absolutely positively sure he has learned his lessons very well. But that oral exam is a toughie. I might have to flunk him a few times:yeahbaby:

For some bizarre reason, (well actually it was a "come on woman you're a grown up and you know how it ends cause you've seen it before and you know it's only a work of fiction and you know he HAD to really die, so take it like a man" reason) I've just watched "Yo-Way-Yo" again online, and quite frankly I blubbed like a baby YET AGAIN!

Can anyone watch this and not cry?
I hate the Beans for ending it like this, I really do, they could have had them all live happily ever after on a nice little planet and Kai and Xev have lots of little Brunnen G/Cluster Lizard/Love Slave kiddies and Stan set up home with Bunny after she dumps that arsehole of a president and 790 become a table decoration and Prince disappear into the ether forever!!!!!!!!!

That one get's me too. It's hard not to tear up when you realize that Prince totally shafts Kai. And when he's laying there laughing all I can think of is that old song by Smokey Robinson;

"Take good look at my face,
You know my smile looks out of place.
If you look closer it's easy to trace,
The tracks of my tears."

Then yeah, I get all teary too. But even though it's hard to watch you realize that Kai has come full circle. The only difference is this time you think back to that moment when he said the dead just want to be dead and realize that after 6000 years in a way the dead finally got what he 'wanted'.

I still cry.... A LOT!!  I even cry at those fan made music videos that show Kai at his final end....  :cryingsmiley:

Heck, I still cry when I watch the Tenth Doctor regenerate!  It's hard saying goodbye to a beloved character - even if it's what they've wanted all along.

It's a testament to just how well realized Kai was as a character- from the writing to the acting - that we have such a strong reaction to his death.

I had the same reaction when Spock died in Wrath of Khan. I think that's a testament to the actor's skills in bringing that character to life. Both MM and Leonard Nimoy took on roles that in all reality we should not have been able to relate to because of their 'lack' of humanity and were able to make the audience feel empathy for them. The writing did help yes, but it was the ability to translate what was on paper to the screen.

Oh, absolutely the skills of the actor - I agree completely. That's why Michael is one of my all-time favorites... and I don't have many favorites at all. I can count them all on two fingers, in fact. ;o)

I have one extra finger in there. There's only three actors I know that really have that ability to chameleon like that. MM (just doesn't do that much that's widely seen), Johnny Depp (Most people just don't see beyond his fame to the talent he has) and Guy Pearce (Knock your socks off good).

Unfortunately I have to give Guy tops on the chameleon abilities because you really don't recognize him from film to film. The man can totally transform into someone else. Not just looks and mannerisms, but accents. Just listen to him from film to film.

God yes, some of those fan vids are even worse than the episode, esp with the choice of music - killer!!

Yes, Kai got his wish, he really did want to die properly and thinking about it, if I'd been "alive dead" and killed thousands of people for thousands of years, I think I'd be ready to call it a day too! It's just so sad and cruel that he got to experience being alive again for just those few moments!

Tennants' regeneration scene was totally heartbreaking esp as he said he didn't want to go! Did you see Dr Who at The Proms? They showed all 10 regeneration scenes and, granted the first 8 were pretty dire (special effects were very ropey and dodgy music) but when it came to David's there wasn't a dry eye in the place!

Johnny Depp is an amazing actor. He's esp good when he works with Tim Burton.

It's a pity that Michael doesn't get to do much on celluloid. Perhaps he needs a new manager? ;-)

I'm not sure after reading some of his interviews it's a case of needing a new manager or just that he's comfortable enough financially to be choosy about what he does. He works when he wants to instead of because he has to. In a way that's good, it lets him control the quality of what he does get involved in instead of jumping into something he would be embarrassed about later just to get a paycheck.

Michael hasn't had a manager since he was on Lexx.  Maybe that's the problem!  Or at least part of it...

If he's not embarrassed to act in a waste recycling plant (nice way of saying garbage dump), then I doubt he'd be embarrassed about much.  I think it's the type of role, he loves shakespeare.

Okay, I've got several things to respond to, so here it goes.... and it's all good!  I realize my tone sounded a bit ominous there...  LOL

Jensau - I didn't see the DW Proms yet, but I heard about the part with all the regenerations.  In addition to getting the Christmas episode of Doctor Who actually on Christmas here in the US (for the first time ever!) we're also getting the Proms on the same night!  I can't wait!!  :JSMIRK:

Abby - Johnny Depp = Brilliant!  Can't argue with ya there!

I lost my job in April of 2009, so I've had loads of time on my hands... I'd gladly take on the role of Michael's manager!!  Of course, I have zero experience - but I sure have enough enthusiasm for the man and his talent.  Gosh, how I would've loved to have seen MM as MacBeth!  I love Shakespeare... and I've seen the publicity shots on MM.com and they look incredible!

I loved David Tennant's Hamlet.  It was truly amazing - I highly recommend it, if any of you are so inclined.  It's available on DVD.

At least DT is starting to get more name recognition here in the US.  Michael certainly deserves the same.

The key is 'struggling' is he struggling or is he comfortable. I know people comfortable living in houses one step up from shack as long as the basic needs are met....

Believe it or not I have a cousin that lives in a small 3 room house built back in the 20's; no running water and an outhouse. And he's not hurting financially. He's just very happy with what he has. Hopefully a certain thespian is not running outside with a page from the Sears catalog! :bouncebig:

Well to put alot of speculation to rest, regarding the reasons for Michael's work, or lack thereof, a couple of things need to be clarified.

He's not hurting financially. Lexx money was VERY good for the cast members, and I got this directly from the horses' mouth. For example, when the cast had to film on location, they were given a 'per diem' (pay) that would make your mouth water. It was said that the principal members of the cast made well over a million dollars during the course of filming, and with wise investments and lack of impulse spending, you could amass quite a large nest egg.

Add to the fact that for the first 3 seasons of Lexx, Michael kept his personal expenditures extremely low,and even after Lexx, lived in Germany with a friend for a long time, and has NO manager or agent to pay on a retainer. Add to the fact that he spends almost no money on himself, (clothes especially)  and you'll find an extremely frugal person who could be set for life without ever having to work again.

So be that as it may, the work he's apparently been doing has been only when motivated by the urging of one friend or the other or a role he couldn't pass up. Not too many of those floating around either. He's obviously not affected by celebrity status, even though he was on the cusp of superstardom at one  point and turned it down because of the kinds of roles he'd be expected to play and didn't enjoy that.

Soooo....misanthrope? Maybe...but  you can't have everything. I'm sure everyone would like to see more work over the years, but we get what we get, I guess.

You certainly know a lot about this man Maya! :)

I'm curious, I would love to know how you got to run the only authorised MM site and how you got to be friends with him?

Kind of what I was saying. Between the initial salary and royalties he's probably not hurting. Since he's not hurting he doesn't have to whore himself to survive. There are a lot of actors out there that are 'successful' meaning a list famous that are constantly whoring themselves because it's the only way they can afford their chosen lifestyle.

I have Never gotten a sense that Michael is a keep up with the Jones jet setting fool. as a matter of fact if you listen to one of the interviews with Jeffrey Hirshfield, Lex Gigeroff and Paul Donovan they actual joke about him being a bit of a moocher.

I saw the video on You Tube a while back and Jeffrey, Lex and Paul Donovan are talking about the cast And I think it was Jeffrey that said something along the lines of Michael not having to hit him up for a loan anymore. :D

As for the site, I had the site up for a couple of years as an unofficial MM site, since there wasn't one out there. Brian, Xenia, Louise, Patty, Rolf and a few other cast members had their own official sites, but Michael has never had one. There was a fan site or two up over the years, but most of them were just Lexx fan sites. I built the mm.com site with both Lexx and MM related items and have archived Lexx memoribilia since 1996, and have tons of interviews. pics, autographs and lots of rare items, and when the other Lexx sites started disappearing, I made it bigger.

During the Megacon convention, I talked to Michael about the site, he'd seen it, and had approved of the format, and we discussed making it an official site, since he had no agent, manager or anyone to provide a site to showcase all of his work. I make absolutely NO money on the site, and I don't sell anything from the site either, except a link to Amazon.com for Lexx dvds. It now is probably the biggest actor's site on the web, (almost 80 pages) and the biggest Lexx site ever made. I will continue to run the site  until which time there is no longer interest in either Lexx or Michael as an actor, which may be a long time.

all fair comments.   having said that, I was referring not so much to the financial status of your average actor, but the ego status.  if mr mcmanus has dealt with that particular demon, or was never inhabited by same in the first place, then I stand corrected.  well, sit corrected ... since I'm on the puter an' all

and what a fine job you do, too!  that mcmanus has the thumpingest website in the dark zone speaks volumes for the cult status of the show, if you ask me.  and you may ... ask me

incidentally, does he actually drop in to your site (so to speak)?  more importantly, does he lurk here very often?  I'll bet he does .... after all, what man could resist the temptation to know what an oversexed group of perimenopausal women are saying about him :new_shocked:

As long as he runs down toward Chicago, it'll all be good...  :kai-red:I'll keep him safe.

BTW, on the topic of Michael's career.  I'd love to hear more of his singing!  He should record an album or something - maybe even just some MP3s to sell via MM.com.  He has one of THE MOST gorgeous voices I've ever heard!

I grew up in Virginia it's why I live in the south now! A couple of days and a few margaritas and Dos Equis later :OliveDrink: and he'll forget there is even anything north of Austin! Guess I'd have to take him to 6th street Austin since that's where all the good music comes from.:beatles:

Hey, we've got plenty of pubs in Chicago... I'm Irish, so I've got built in radar for those things!  LOL  Granted, I don't drink.... but that would just enable Michael to enjoy himself and let loose even more!  I'll be the designated everything.  Plus, we've got great music here, too... Blues, jazz - not to mention all the great Irish music in and around the city.  Michael is of Irish descent, so I'm sure he'd appreciate that!  I've also got a great friend who is a jazz singer/musician, so she could get us into the BEST places for music... and he could jam with her buds!

:beatles:

Boy we really are selling ourselves here, aren't we?  LOL  Crazy single ladies in our 40's...  :xmas66:

Seriously, though.... I wish he'd record some music.  It seems to be something he really enjoys.  Even if it's just a little thing to share with his fans.  I know we'd all embrace it with encouragement and enthusiasm (grand understatement of the YEAR!).  :D

The actress, Milla Jovovich, is also a singer.  She released a CD about a decade ago and then her acting career took over, but she still gets together with her musician friends and they record stuff that she then posts as MP3s to her website for fans to download for free.  She's not trying to commercial, it's just something she has fun doing and she enjoys the creative outlet.  That's kinda what I was thinking about when brought this up regarding Michael and his musical abilities.

I remember Milla's video.

Unfortunately it would have to be pretty much be independently produced. I just can't see him doing anything according to a 'formula'.

I can see it now, MM in the studio with some crappy canned commercial music and three spoken on the track-"Kiss my ass!"

Uh maybe he should do, it after all Soul singer Millie Jackson had a hit back in the 70's called Phuck You!

The only thing I miss about VA is the turning of the trees. I made a 24 year pitstop in Florida so Texas heat is comfortable. Warmth without 90% humidity on a daily basis!

Really?  I've visited Texas three times around the Dallas area, once in May, June and September, and even then it was hot as hell and humid as shit.

Remember how big Texas is we've got almost every climate you can think of in one state, Houston is just as miserable as Florida. San Antonio is low humidity and pretty temperate. Not at all like Dallas that gets buried under that white stuff. Even Austin just an hour or so north has a different climate from San Antonio.

Oddly enough, for all the time I lived in Dallas, I can count on the fingers of one hand how many times it snowed. The last time was a whopping 5 inches. It shut the entire city down. This past couple of years have seen more snowfall than the past 20.

Kai's story broke my heart. I was crushed that it ended the way it did. It was so unfair! But I think it absolutely had to end that way. He had to die. A happy ending would have been, I think, satisfying in the moment, but it wouldn't have had the impact of the tragic ending. I don't think it would have stuck with me. A happy, storybook ending would have been nowhere near as powerful.

Not entirely so, afaiu.

A close friend is on the autistic / aspergers spectrum and finds that one of the major problems is what's called 'mind-blindness', ie inability to read other people's emotions. We 'normals' especially females, all take it for granted that we have a two-way interaction with anyone we're talking with f2f. There's a constant feeedback between us, with body language and subtle facial expressions that go far beyond bare language. This crucial stuff is what autistic people miss out on.

That's why autistic people by and large (though every individual's different, just like we are) suffer terribly from bullying and social isolation - heck many can't even see when someone is going to mug them, for example, because they just can't read the intent there. That's why autistic people often <i>become</i> detached and withdrawn, because non-autistic people mostly cannot understand, or are even outright intolerant, of difference.

In some ways autism is only like being a bloke - but gigatimes more so, such that i believe Prof Simon Baron-Cohen (yeah, he's Sacha's bro) has referred to autism as "hyper-maleness".

Truth is though, girls get wet for a dark and moody man, and lets face it, when you're out there a-slaughtering the opposition you don't need (or want) to empathise with the other guy, which is all doubtless why these psychological traits have proved adaptive = evolutionarily fit over history.

And now we have computers - which is where the autistic mind really wins out again.

The Mind is fragile. That's why you must always be on guard to protect it.
The saying, put junk in, get junk out, is especially true of the Mind.

Kai, is always on guard, physically and mentally, pondering a situation before acting on it.
It takes mental fortitude to (not)live his life.
And to (not)live for his friends also.
This, by our way of thinking, is sad indeed.
But maybe, not to him.

I see where what you mean. But, that is not always the case. My 7 year old is autistic and is very outgoing and warm towards the general populus.

Kai - the saddest story ever?
Well, the saddest story…,it sounds more like a story of Romeo and Juliette_)
Let’s think logically:
He was born in the society that managed to fight the death.
He had been alive, he had friends (here probably we can even remember the word “comrades” as soon as they fought together later), he loved and was loved, he reached a certain (highest) level of pleasure one or two times, at least, he was the One, a chosen one and he followed his destiny. He got friends and even a family on Lexx. He died alive, he died feeling and understanding that he is dying. He feels. And let’s face the reality, thanks to the Michael McManus’s acting we have some backgrounds thoughts that he felt something all these years in an abnormal way, still he did experience some thing.
Someone’s mentioned here Spock and Data. As for me, I believe that only Data managed to stay without almost any emotions through the all episodes. Spock was far away from emotionless figure and Kai was sometimes more human in his eyes or smile than many absolutely alive people nowadays.
Btw, what if he stayed alive? I know that there are more than enough guesses and scenarios of the fifth season, but all of them offer some adventures and challenges to our beloved team. But wasn’t it enough? Probably they already had enough on the plate and deserved a right to find a new home.
I always thought that the ending of the Lexx was the best. If Kai stayed alive the first thing that was waiting for him was a wave of regrets for all those people he killed, he might have been burdened by a thought that he could have done something different. He would ask himself whether he made a right decision leaving his home. There would be lots of buts, ifs, whys in his life. At least, that’s how I feel about all these things.
