Below is an interview conducted by me with Michael this past week, I hope you enjoy it and find some VERY revealing anwers to some interesting questions.

The publication of this interview is strictly for lexxverse.com and michael-mcmanus.com.  Permission is not given for anyone to post this anywhere else, translated or otherwise, without prior contact with MayaXXX.

Michael McManus questions: March 17, 2009

Theater Work related topics:

1. What projects have you been doing this past couple of years, and what did you enjoy the most about them?

i've been doing very little acting in the last few years. macbeth was certainly the highlight in every way. the cast was good, the director was inventive and prepared, it is a production i would love to revisit and one of my favorite roles ever.

2. What playwrights or directors would you most like to work with?

a hard question. it feels a bit too late in the day to chase down favorite directors. that would be too much to ask. when i think about wading back into the fray i would be happy to work with competent directors. my hero directors are elizabeth lacompt and frank castorf. of canadian stage directors i like francois girard.

3. If offered a Broadway 'big name' musical, would you consider it or do you favor more 'independent' productions?

i don't have anything against broadway musicals. can't see it somehow but whether i'd say 'yes' is huge speculation. i've said 'no' to musicals before but never to a really big production.

4. What do you think of the current state of Canadian theatre? Do you have any ideas for improvement?

a good question. i can only really comment on toronto and ontario theatre. it is to me a shambles and i puzzle over how to make a contribution without just adding to the problem. 'straight' theatre is in terrible shape.

improvement might come from some combination of more time, money and more skilltalent; where those things are going to come from is anybody's guess.

5. What book(s) would you most like see made into a theatrical production?

hmmm...maybe, 'the saddest summer of samuel s'

6. Have you written anything of your own and if so, would you want to direct it yourself?

i don't think much of my own writing; if i did write something for film or theatre i would certainly have to direct as nobody else would have a clue what it was about. in my experiment in film making from a while ago it also seemed unnecessary to write all of the dialogue if you are directing it yourself and know what a scene needs.

7. Would you consider doing a play version of any of Nigel Bennet's books co-written with P.N. Elrod?

no.

8. What was the film you were scheduled to do in Germany before the producer had to cancel the project?

i don't feel i can disclose all the dirty details but i can tell you that the producerdirectorwriter was mr donovan who produced lexx. it was a b movie-style script; some sex, violence and a large dose of religion!

9. Are there any other film projects you'd like to join?

there probably are but i haven't been looking for work recently. i've been doing the work that finds me. locally i haven't read or seen anything that makes me want to be a working actor.

10. If you had the offer for another TV series, would you prefer it in the Scifi genre or something completely different?

a good western would be my pick. scifi is okay, it mostly depends on the writing and directing. if i get to do another series just make it an interesting one. it's a long time to spend with character.

Lexx related-topics:

1. During 'Fluffdaddy', "Live Kai" expounds on the obsession of some of his fans, do you see yourself in a parallel to that problem, and did you help write that part of the script yourself?

i didn't write it myself and the identification with the character of live kai is not one for one. i believe that j hirschfield was using what he knew about me(a lot) and blowing it up into a satire of--ME. very clever, and enjoyable, and difficult. that's what i suspect but you can ask him. the episode was way too long so not all of live kai's subplot made it in. when we were filming it i did turn into live kai. not everybody was thrilled with my personality during that part of shooting. my main contribution to live kai was to ask for henry the fifth instead of hamlet as the one man play. it seemed more appropriate to the character and uncommon to theatre; their have been many one man hamlet's, no henry's that i know of.

2. Did you ever consider that this show would be such a cult classic?

when we toasted the beginning of the project, brian, p donovan, r siegl and me, there was a feeling that it could be very, very successful. my feeling is that it achieved some of that success. the cult status is cool, the classic has to wait a few years yet.

3. Do you agree that the character of 'Kai' is a metaphor for a 'Destroyer/Messiah' godlike entity comparison to several ancient religions

i read oliver sack's book about autism: an anthropoligist on mars. he talks about the attachment some autistic people feel towards the unfeeling spock and calls him the 'mandatory autistic character in a scifi narrative,' or something to that effect. that's more my line of thinking about what the character represents. i also didn't try to 'want to be human' because it really bothered me that 'data' always wanted to be human which was satirized beautifully in 790's little brain chip.

4. Have you had any contact with Paul D lately regarding any future projects, and would you like to work with him again?

see 8. above...of the people i know he is the most alarmed at the extent to which i have removed myself from the scene.

5. Would you have liked Kai's character to develop more in the series, or were you happy with the way things wrapped up?

i couldn't be happier with the arc of my character through the series. i like the way it ended. a little deus ex machina was just the thing for 65 hours of tv.

6. We heard that you lobbied for the series to end with Season 4, how did that come about?

that's not quite accurate: p donovan was wrapping the series once the earth was destroyed. i lobbied heavily and successfully for the chess episode, wanting my character to find an ending with the end of the series.

7. If you could have made changes to the series yourself to improve it, what suggestions would you have made, or did you?

i was never shy about expressing my opinion. most beneficial would have been to continue through the years without really big breaks of time in between. that wasn't possible but i expect that doing in four years what it took us six years to do would have been a big advantage.

8. Do you believe in the show's premise of reincarnation ?

i would say that reincarnation in the show is a conceit rather than a premise--not to nit-pick. personally i haven't seen any evidence of reincarnation. people of many religion believe it but i have to say i don't.

Other topics:

1. Lots of actors go to great lengths to preserve their on-screen 'appearance'. Would you ever consider doing any plastic surgery or other procedures to prolong that appearance?

it is more and more common. i'm not comfortable with face surgery. i don't like looking at it so i think it would have to be something extreme for me to go under a knife for cosmetic reasons.

2. What authors have you been reading lately ?

cormac mccarthy most recently. also reread herodotus's history this winter. i love that book.

3. What kind of music are you currently listening to?

red garland. john zorn. the new portishead.

4. Is golf still a main pastime and if so, what's your handicap these days?

golf's competition these days is squash which i also love and am much better at. my golf handicap remains embarrassing but as i was told by a friend  recently when i connect with the ball i hit it beautifully. i'm going to try to lower my score this summer so i will tell you what my handicap is in october!!

5. Any news of any possible conventions in the near future, and do you still want to do them?

i DO want to do conventions i'm just being horribly disorganized about it. i will get the ball rolling. it's a question of 'when'. it always is with a guy like me.

6. Would you ever consider doing your own political radio program? What are your thoughts on the current US political situation?

it would be wonderful to host a radio show. i have no idea if i have the gift. i idolize terri gross from npr.

i've been an obama fan since iowa, can't wait to see how all the unraveling gets glued back together. was relieved when bushco left the field.

7. Where would you like to be in 20 years time?

?? --let's say five. in five years i want to be acting regularly in canada and the us, playing golf to a nine handicap, performing once a month at least with a quartet--bass, drums, violin and piano, and i want to find myself in the arms of a loving woman getting it right for the first time in my life!

End

Excellent to see his viewpoint, especially in Canadian movie and theater productions. I didn't know it was in such bad shape here. I figured that once you did a series like Lexx you were set, at least in Canada. Perhaps it is just that he wants quality roles and so that is why they are far and few between.

Great interview, it was great to hear about what he has been up to.

Awesome interview, Maya!  The first of what I hope will be many (I'd love to see at least one from each of the principle cast members in this new section)!

This sounds like it could have been interesting (to say the least...).  Does anybody know anything else about it?

I would love to have seen MM on HBO's Deadwood (in at least one scene opposite the god-like Ian McShane).  In its third and--unfortunately--final season, the show introduced a troupe of eccentric, slightly out-of-their-element theater actors.  I could easily imagine them finding a role for him on that show.

Tip o' the hat to Mike for confirming my suspicions.

Then you're in good company, pal.  Love that guy's writing (even if his near-total lack of punctuation can be more than a little annoying).

All in all he seems like a fairly laid back, personable guy.  If I ever do drag myself to a convention (or in the highly unlikely event that they decide to hold one where I live) I'd love to shoot the breeze with him (you know...once I got all the fanboy fawning and "Who would win in a fight between..." questions out of the way).

Most enjoyable read - almost like discovering an episode of Lexx which I haven't watched over and over again.

mayaXXX wrote:

Though there was reincarnation in Season 3, in season 4 (maybe Xevivor or Rock) Kai posited a theory that there were only so many types of humanoids possible; I think this concept is more akin to "doppleganger."

I'd like to know if Paul Donovan had Friedrich Nietzsche in mind when he devised the repeating history narrative.
Nietzsche immediately came to mind when I first saw the Time Prophet story because of my reading "Nietzsche as Philosopher"  by Arthur C. Danto. According to Danto, Nietzsche literally believed that history would repeat itself again and again; it was in order to break the endless frustrating cycle that Nietzshe devised the concept of "will to power."
(Danto felt that on balance Nietzsche was a sociopath.)

Wow! Great and unexpected interview. Good job Maya (and M.McM )!!!

So disappointing though to hear that one of my favorite actors isn't working much right now! I have liked him in the other non-lexx parts that I have managed to see him in. Such a hard business :(

I don't watch anything on the scifi channel right now btw.

Well wanting to do them and getting invited are two different things. Unfortunately, the Lexx legacy is not as hot a topic for conventions as it was 10 years ago. Now if only we could get him a guest starring role as a vampire on "True Blood", all would be perfect...

Yes it is genius! He would make a perfect vampire slayer.  I'm really burnt out on the whole "vampires are nice people with fangs" trend.   I'd loved to see him brace...er stake a few!  He can start with Twilight and move on from there:yeahbaby:

Actually a Vampire did not have a child.  Blade's mother was turned as she was giving birth. so that was rather a bit of a fluke.  But the Vampires in Blade are for the most part evil and I'm a traditionalist in the sense that vampires are evil, not nice misunderstood people with fangs.

Hey, Jean-Claude sounded a bit too prissy for me, blue eyes notwithstanding, but there were few others that Anita Blake stuck in her back pocket for later consideration. Unfortunately for Anita, her status as were-leopard Queen is beginning to cut into her vampire's sex life...

Yeah, Anita started out as this hard-ass prim zombie animator  and ends up sleeping with the entire Supe community just because she can get away with it.

Interesting that all of Hamilton's male characters all look like different versions of Fabio or some other romance novel cover boy. Long hair down to their  butts or whatever, cut, buff, either strippers or something similar. Just once I'd like to see a guy that was military buzz-cut, martial arts trained Navy Seal or whatever...you know, kind of like Jason Statham !! The long hair thing just seems way too 70's to me now.  I'd like to see them rough, tough and butch. Just my personal preference, hehe.

Maya, my darling, do try to keep up.   :bigwink2:

Those long-haired guys cut their hair from time to time and sometimes even get a buzz cut.

If you're using the black and steel version of the message board, just change your color to black text in the upper tool box and it won't show up. As for Ms Blake, I haven't read all of the books yet, so bear with me...

Soooo does that mean that Nathaniel isn't her pomme de sang any longer? Shoot.

Anita sleeps with anyone and anything. I think she only draws the line now at human.  Guess Dolph and Zerbrowski are safe.  Wonder if I could sleep with every man in sight and then blame the ardeur too?:bigthink:

BTW I agree she's been looking at too many romance novel covers.  The only one I recall cutting their hair was Richard and he did it while he was having some ah...issues.

I think alot of these fantasy/mystery writer ladies are from a certain age group, (over 40) and they put onto paper the kind of  guys that get THEM hot. Not to mention that by and large, most of the female characters are actually just a 'Mary Sue' archetype of the writer themselves as they'd like to really be. Not that there's anything wrong with that. *btw, I'm much older than 40, so I can talk, hehe*

I stopped with a "Killing dance"...:(

I`ve just leaf trough the"Skin trade",and been very dissapointed with plot.

Too much sex,to little original lines .

(..main reason I read previous books were her feelings,

her childhood memories,(...her dog She raised from the grave),

problems with her job (the man raised from the tomb because He did not leave a will. She was the only one that remained after reading the testament,

and after his (greedy) family left.Man just wanted to go home and she had to put him back into his grave (..sniff..:(

She was more human then....

Anita Blake books can be good when she tones down the constant sex a bit.  Personally you can keep the vamps, I'll take Ted "Edward" Forrester.  I think he's probably the most interesting character in the Anita Blake world.  Such a bad ass.  If they ever made a movie from the series Edward would be a perfect role for Michael.  I think he would really sink his teeth into that one! Pun intended.

A couple of the better ones she did later in the series was "Obsidian Butterfly" and "The Harlequin"

Who says I am finished with reading ..?...

I`ve just said ,that I`ve stopped with "Killing dance".

At least ,for a while.

(...I `m dealin` with serious case of over-saturation with vampires,

werevolves,ghouls..etc..etc.. )

.............so very true...

Our "Gun for hire"..??

Interesting choice.

He`s got so many aliases, and fake ID`s (and guns),that  I`m not sure if Edward is his real name..

Actually Edward is one of the best characters she's written, I wish she'd give him more 'face time' with Blake. The other guys just seem to be hanging around hoping to get her sexual crumb leftovers. I'd like to see her team up with him more for a good story, unless she's already done that and I've missed it. So far I've only read 4 out her her million books, so bear with me. I'm also working on the 'Black Dagger Brotherhood'.  Very nice.

Obsidian Butterfly is a good one to find out more about the mysterious "Edward".  Much, much more including the fact that he can be a first class prick.

Actually, I kind of like that. He's not  some simpering boy-toy laying around on her bed all day waiting to get screwed, he can actually take care of himself instead of being rescued every five minutes... Plus he's a total bad-ass.

There's something to be said about a man that can take care of himself and you too if need be.   Out of all the men hovering around her only Edward seems to know what it means to be a man.

Well,....(sorry,girls....)...I prefer Jean Claude,

and not because of his "midnight blue eyes" or his french charm or his "Master of the city" role.

Main reasons:

1.)He was born as a peasent=>In his veins does not flow aristocratic blood

(First whipping boy,and than a prostitute for the others, he had to work to earn his place in (vampire) society.)

2.)Both of them are sharing the same pain of growing up,Both of them are carrying the same scares

(...and they both killed the "Things" who have caused them those scars)

3.)He is not running away from his vampire-side.(Like that guy from "Twatlight" or Stephen Salvatore..).

"I love you as much as i can",those were his words ,when he tried to express his feelings (in "Bloody bones",I think)

4.)although he pointed out that "there are some things that he wouldn`t do even for her",he is constanly changing and making compromises,

....and so on,and so on....

Well he is probably one of the least threatening of her guys, but he let a bunch of other vamps and bad guys beat her up in Circus of the Damned, right in front of him,  for no good reason other than he just felt like it, after she asked him for a favor, sooooo...I'm not a fan of Jean-Claude...but I'm sure he's plenty hot,  but not trustworthy completely.

No he's not and he has this maddening habit of hiding behind her skirts.  He's been doing it since Guilty Pleasures when he got her to kill Nickalos.  Reminds me of Stanley Tweedle with fangs!

You're both behind on the books so you're unaware of the character development that's taken place in the latter books.  Large and small changes have occurred.

Maya, your interpretation of Anita's need to have sex with the supernaturals is flawed.  She's infected with the Ardeur.  The Ardeur feeds on sex the way that vampires feed on blood.  Are you, a Founding Member of Kaisluts, being judgmental?!?  :new_shocked:  Oh, no, say it ain't so!
Could this be jealousy?  Because I could so see myself dealing with all those guys Anita bitches about having to sleep with.  I wouldn't complain about all that wonderful sex.  Do you imagine yourself wearing Anita's thong?:partytime2:  Oh, yeah, been there, imagined that!

I won't spoil you further so there's no more to say, and invisitexting isn't happening with this crappy browser.  :u055a:  Sometimes I wonder why I dumped IE.

I've actually read all of them up to Skin Trade and Anita always seems to be pulling Jean Claude's metaphysical bacon out of the fire.  I don't see him risking himself.  Even when dealing with Marmee Noir it's the wolves that come to her rescue not Jean Claude.

Some of the characters have grown such as Nathaniel.  He is much less "needy' now which is a good thing and Jason has also become more sure of himself.  But the truth is Jean Claude still waits for Anita to do his dirty work and doesn't lift much more than a finger when she needs help.

I fully agree with Edward's statement  when he tells her "You should have killed Jean Claude yourself before it all got too deep."

Well I did state that I haven't read all the books yet, and the ones I have read are not necessarily in chronological order. As for Anita and her 'pile of puppies' bedchamber, more power to her, nothing judgemental about that. I would rather see better plot development instead of using the 'ardeur' as an excuse for Blake to have all these Supes running around her bedroom. I just seems that's what happens when the author runs out of ideas...

As for me being jealous???...Surely you jest. Anita's body count is still not anywhere close to mine, and probably never will be.

Fair enough.  I don't count the partners myself.  Her whinging and complaining about all the sex does become annoying at times.

I enjoy Hamilton's Meredith Gentry books more these days, but I keep reading Anita Blake in hopes...let's just say I keep up with them in hope.  We're probably in agreement about the supernatural kingdom crap.  It's becoming a drag, and all the threats against Anita, Richard and Jean-Claude are a bore.  Too bad she can't come up with a dazzling plot once in a while.  Best thing I read in that plot-line was a recent short story, but it was another threat against one of her entourage.  It's called Flirt, if anyone's interested.

Come to think of it, most of Laurell's guy friends and relations have long hair.  Perhaps there's a connection?

I haven't checked out any of Hamilton's other heroines yet. I'm reading some of the other series that Charlaine Harris has out. There's the Lily Blake series, The Aurora Teagarden Mysteries and the Harper Connelly series. Only one of those pertains to anything 'supernatural' and that's the Harper Connelly stories. She's an investigator that can find the dead and speak to them, similar to Anita Blake, only they're not zombies when she finds them. THe other 2 series are strictly mysteries, and neither character is a cop or any kind of Supe. Still good though..

Yes.

I prefer serious books like Frank Herbert`s "Dune",or "Startide rising" or Riverworld series.

First one I read when I was 14.

(...Oh..the sandworms, prophecy, forever dark skies.....I` will never forget it...

Wait a minute...... When I think about it,,,It reminds me of the Lexx......)

This interview with Michael was wonderful!  I read it back when I was still lurking.  He's such an intelligent and thoughtful man.  I can only imagine that getting to meet him and spend some time with him must be a truly enjoyable experience.  I hope I get the opportunity someday... there are very few actors I'm at all interested in meeting.  In fact, there are only two, really!  David Tennant from Doctor Who, and Michael McManus.  My respect for their work is boundless.

I'm amazed that an interview with Michael turned into a discussion about Twilight!

Very interesting interview Maya, were you lucky enough to conduct it in person? Did you find out,as he has not been acting, what he has been doing to earn a living? and why on earth is he NOT in the loving arms of a woman?

I have one interview that I conducted in person, the one from Megacon, and the other one was an email interview while he was in Germany. His projects are few and far between, he does an occasional play and just finished 'Blissestrasse' this year, but so far nothing else.

Apparently he pretty much likes to go his own way, and please don't pay too much attention to the personal remarks, alot of that is tongue-in-cheek. I don't ask about his personal life as it's his business and not ours, in spite of all the speculation about who he's dating, etc.

LOL  I wondered the same thing when I read that!  Of course, it's none of our business and I completely respect his privacy... but, if Michael's ever interested....  I'm single.  Just putting that out there...

Can't blame a girl for trying, right?  :D

BTW, Maya?  Is the one you did at Megacon the one where he's in sunglasses and you guys look like you're outside?  I thought that interview was fantastic!  A good variety of questions.

Hey, he brought it up!

I wasn't wondering WHO he was dating, just WHY he wasn't!

(tho this interview was last year so things may well have changed now and hopefully he's happily in the loving arms of one very lucky woman!)

Yeah, that was the one I did on the loading dock of the convention center because it was the only half-way quiet place in the whole building and the light was better. Michael blocked his own camera angle and we set up the mic just under the handle of the loading cart he was sitting on. I half expected someone to come by and demand we return the damn thing right in the middle of the interview, and we were lucky we weren't interrupted every five minutes.  The sunglasses were certainly NOT my idea, BTW, but apparently they were necessary since it was the butt-crack of dawn and everyone had been up all night partying, myself included. Unfortunately I had NO sunglasses so I had to rough it. I thought he did a great job considering he'd had no sleep to speak of. I barely remember anything else that happened that day.

Was this after the "Party till you can't find your way to the elevator" incident?

Sorry I just couldn't resist!

Yes, this was after the 'Lost elevator' incident....which happened at about 3am or thereabouts.

If I had been more sober (yeah, right) I would have made more of an effort to make sure that he'd at least  found his way to the correct wing of the hotel, but I was doing good just to stay upright at that point in time...

Brian having bought us cognac on top of endless beers (and my Jack and cokes) sure didn't help, not that I complained about it at the time...I lost Angel somewhere around 12:30 I think, it's all a bit hazy. Kathy was curled up in a fetal postion and snoring merrily when I finally made it back to my room at close to dawn.

Oh we need more details of your drunken evening with Brian and Michael please (and how you managed to join them!) It sounds like you had fun! ;-)
I've been to only one convention and getting any quiet time with the guests is really hard!

LOL  I wondered the same thing when I read that!  Of course, it's none of our business and I completely respect his privacy... but, if Michael's ever interested....  I'm single.  Just putting that out there...

Can't blame a girl for trying, right?  :D

I wondered what happened to y'all.  I was leaning on the elevator when Brian wanted to go up Saturday morning? having pushed the button and waiting leaning against the glowing indicator.  Brian came up and politely (after a moment or two of staring at me, I guess he thought I was leaning on the wall for no good reason) requested that I move so he could push the button to recall the elevator.

I smiled at him and moved to show him the button was illuminated already.  I was waiting for the elevator myself and holding up the wall in the meantime.  :wtflol:  He blustered a bit (it was very much like Stanley Tweedle, he was adorable!) and we stood there, or rather, he stood and I leaned for ten or fifteen minutes before the elevator came at last.  We traveled up together and staggered off one at a time to our various floor destinations.  IIRC it was around 4 am and I was exhausted.

We were hitting the bricks early next morning doing it all over again.  :bounce_pinka:

Well it wasn't that big a deal at the time, pretty much everyone that made it to the convention that was staying at that hotel all managed to stumble into the only bar they had in the lobby and it went to hell from there. There must have been about 10 of us at one time all clustered (pun intended) together in one group of booths.

Also attending were the cast of Farscape, (Virginia Hey, Gigi Edgley and Wayne Pygram) in addition to their convention manager, Jean. A bunch of us saw Virginia and swore it was Xenia, (who was ensconsed in her hotel room for the whole convention) since they were dead ringers for each other. We saw Michael at the bar talking to a Farscape guy and then Brian came in, grabbed Michael and descended on our tables. After that first night everyone just pretty much all met there after the convention hours were over, except for an MM/Farscape dinner date.

Other than one drunken political rant on the last night there, that was pretty much it, right PE? hehe

Oh and the notorious WHEELCHAIR OF DEATH !! Filled with booze even. I swear to God. I had been told by the Events planner at the hotel that we couldn't have booze at our Lexx party room unless we had open bar and paid a ton of extra cash, so I was SO paranoid I almost passed up the opportunity for a ton of free booze provided by one of the Lexx buddies. Only after being verbally chastised by everyone, I begged said Lexx buddy to grab the liquor, and hide it from the staff, of which they did a much more superb job than ever I could. Brian and Michael were VERY grateful.

The problem with the elevators was this: There were 2 separate wings of the hotel with elevators for each side. The bar was located somewhere in the middle. The room numbers for both towers were the same, with the exception of the tower number along with the room number, so for example, there were 2 room #4030. One was West and the other East. If you came out of the bar, and by some accident, turned around to talk to someone, you ended up going to the wrong wing to get to  your room. Hence people getting turned around and stumbling to the wrong tower to their room.

Damn Doubletree.

LOL! You should have known from the Double in the name!

However if you really want to get totally lost and confused try the MGM Grand in Vegas. The main section of rooms is laid out like spokes on a wheel. Try finding the right 'spoke' with All those spirits possessing you!

Or just do like me and stay in the casino! Not too hard to find your way from the roulette wheel to a slot machine no matter how wasted you are!

A question for all the lucky peeps who got to meet Michael at this convention.

Is it just when he's being Kai, or does he look at you like he's either going to kill you or rip your clothes off and jump your bones????

Father Rochefort looked like he would run for his life screaming Hail Mary's if a woman even thought about offering it to him. He was the most gorgeous priest I have ever seen.

If you don't get that one, go to Hulu.com and watch the "For I Have Sinned" episode of Forever Knight.

He's a lot more like Father Rochefort in person, I'm sorry to say.  Kai would be more interesting to talk with...until MM gets really really drunk.  :carrots_disco:  <remembering the short political interview in the bar and how wrong the Canadians got it, until they got it right eventually>

Yeah, I remember a very heated political discussion between you two where he ended up just having to shut it because you were right and he was too hammered to argue effectively, as were we all...hehe. I believe I have it on film somewhere....Oh here it is...

He was either discussing the foibles and insanities of President George Bush, or 790's brain cube.  I forget which one...come to think of it, they're just about one and the same, aren't they?

Very cool! Thanks for the link, Maya.  I had a feeling Michael would be a sweet guy, so it's nice to hear that he really is!  My other big fandom is Doctor Who, and I love David Tennant... I know a few people who have met him as well, and they all say he's a real sweetheart.  It's always nice to hear that about people you respect and admire, ya know?

No drama!!  Amen to that!!

Thanks for the report Maya! Sounds like a really fun and informal convention. I attended a Supernatural con this year and, although I had a really really great time, as everyone was a fan of Supernatural, it was very hard to get any time to chat with the guests.
I remember when the Lexx cast came to the UK to do a signing at Forbidden Planet, they all ended up in the pub with fans. They obviously like a drink or two!!

Lisa, my cousin worked on Merlin and she knows a lot of peeps from Dr Who cast and crew. She says David Tennant is really nice, very sexy but a tad too skinny! She also told me a bit of very funny gossip about Matt Smith!

OOo, Supernatural, love that show.  Maya and I watch it every week and talk about it.  Some of the funniest episodes are when the shape shifter is dressed like Dracula and he's uh...speeding away on his Moped, and later we see Dean in liederhosen (spelling).  And the time Dean screamed like a little girl when he was scared of the cat in the ghost episode was hilarious!  Did you get a chance to talk to the 'Winchester' boys?

That ep "Monster Movie" is one of my favs. The guy who played Dracula is called Todd Stashwick. He was at the convention and he was one of the guys I got to chat (briefly) with. He's a real sweet heart and very good looking in the flesh he's also a big Dr Who and Torchwood fan. He chats a lot on FB and Twitter - very friendly bloke. Got to chat with Jim Beaver who plays "Bobby" and Traci, who played "Pamela" (the psychic who gets blinded) Mark Pelligrino was there who plays "Lucifer" didn't get to talk with him at all but during the stage talks he was utterly hilarious and a bit mad!

The Winchester boys weren't present this year which I was slightly relieved about because they both attended the year before and apparently it was utter carnage!

I'm going to the next UK con in May and Jensen and Mark Crowley are the 2 guests confirmed so far.

Here's a pic of me with Jim at the evening "Twisted Horror" themed disco!

For the record, I love, Love, LOVE Supernatural!!!  There is a Supernatural Con here in Chicago every year, but I've been too broke to go - I'm one of those long-term unemployed minions.  UGH.  The cast of that show are awesome, but I get the feeling from people who have been there that Creation runs a very tight con... so there probably isn't much of a chance to get any significant time with the cast.  Too bad... I'm sure Jared and Jensen, etc., wouldn't have any issues with spending more time with the fans.

Tall and skinny.... that's how I likes me men!  LOL  David and Michael fit the bill, too.  It seems everyone has met David but me!  Living on the wrong side of the pond and all can really stink!  :u055a:

Gossip about Matt, eh???  Okay, now - spill it.  :D

Thank you! The theme for the evening dance was "Twisted Horror" but my friends and I decided we would just go Gothic, hence the vast amount of slap I am wearing!!
Jim was a real good sport cause he was the only guest that came to the evening do and he got mobbed! When things had calmed down a bit I wandered over for a quick chat and had my photo taken with him. He also joined in the dancing later! He was hilarious doing the "Time Warp" and the "Macarena"!! I think there's some footage on YT somewhere.

Maya, I've just re-read the Megacon report and I'm a bit confused! (doesn't take much!) Was there 2 Lexx tables set up? Did you organise one and some russians do the other? Did you arrange for the guys to be there? Can anyone set up a table for any show at this covention?

Are there a lot of questions in this post?

No problem answering your questions, hehe.

At Scifi conventions, there are 3 types of tables:

Cast tables or show tables from a tv show or  movie where the cast, writers or artists appear for a fee and make money.

Vendor tables where certified dealers sell merchandise, like Marvel or the TShirt companies.

Fan tables, which are paid for and run by a fan or someone off the street doing whatever to make money on the side. They don't have to be certified, unless they're selling copyrighted material. They have to have a vendor license and an IRS form to report the income.

That was the problem we had at the Lexx cast table, a fan table had been set up and was selling UNAUTHORIZED Lexx memoribilia without the vendor license, IRS form or approval of the cast.

The Lexx cast table was set up by BK(convention manager) and the cast members in conjunction with the promoter, Beth Widera. All we did was help man the table for the cast members when needed and set up the party in advance of Brian coming in, since he wanted the party. Those kinds of jobs are not just given out to people they don't know since they involve money and sensitive materials.

We're not as good as the US with conventions over here in the UK but we are catching up and there are now quite a few sci fi cons throughout the country.

Any chance you could sort something out for next year in the UK??

Pretty Please????:D

Who gets booked for conventions is not up to us or even the cast. They have to be invited by the convention promoters, whose goal is to make as much money in personal appearances as possible. Unfortunately, a show like Lexx wouldn't bring in as many paying customers as Stargate SG1, Harry Potter or even Spiderman. It's their intent to maximize the amount of people thru the door with ticket sales. Lexx has been over for 10 years, and was never quite as big as Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica, so their appearances have dropped off over the years.

The promoters have to pay for plane tickets, hotel rooms and food, and the cast brings their own pics, etc, to get signed. If the cast wants a personal table, they pay for it themselves. It can get extremely expensive to bring in either Canadian or German cast members for a couple of days. Too bad for us, unfortunately.

That's a shame esp as Michael said in his interview that he would love to do another con!

Perhaps we should just organise a party instead?? ;-)

The fans are spread pretty thin and right now it's horribly expensive to travel. We've had mini-get-togethers over the years, but not everyone was able to attend because of work, school, money, logistics, etc...but it's a nice thought.

And I keep doing those customer service surveys you find on some store receipts, like at Walgreens. Sometimes you can win as much as $10,000! Every little bit helps. :O)

I've also entered and won a few church raffles in my day - which is fitting since I just finished up watching Michael as Fr. Rochefort in Forever Knight...  :xangel1:

Some people just go to conventions... The cast of "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" got a table at the SanDiego Comicon a few years back, and then sold pictures and such. For them, it was easy; they were local.

Just saying...

Hello Nica and good point! I'm sure if the guys wanted to attend a con, they could pretty much sort it themselves. Perhaps they don't want to? :-(

I'm still up for the party tho, Brian's a party animal, perhaps he could have a word with Michael and Xenia.........
Tho, living in the UK, I guess I'd have to attend vicariously!!

I doubt seriously that's ever going to happen, guys, let's just be honest here. It's fun to fantasize about a Lexx convention where we can all pal around with the cast, but the reality is not economically feasible for anyone, not to mention the logistics, or the fact that some of the cast members are just not interested. Sorry to burst bubbles.

AS for just going to a convention on their own dime and such, they'd have to make THOUSANDS of dollars it would take to offset the expense of flying in from out of the country, (Xenia is in Germany, remember?) , bring family members along, pay for pics to be printed, pay for hotels, food, and all the other expenses that a convention would pay for IF they were invited by the Convention promoters. If they all lived in town, they could buy their own table, but that isn't possible for ANY conventions since the cast are so spread out across the world.

Well sorry guys, but remember, the show has been over for 10 years, so alot of it has to do with that. Now if we were talking about Stargate Universe or Vampire Diaries, all the convention promoters would be falling all over themselves to get them, so alot of it is just that it's more relevant in terms of being more current.

Well, that was nice of them to ask MM to dinner.  I'd bet they had a fun time, too... The cast of Farscape seem pretty cool and friendly, as does Michael.

I'll probably get shouted at for asking this, but I'm sure I read somewhere on here that Michael was divorced and had 1 child?

Purely out of curiousity does anyone know who he married ?
Obviously not wanting name and address but general stuff like, was she an actress? Canadian or German?

Does he have girl or boy?

Michael's personal information regarding his family is not something I'm allowed to post on the site, for obvious reasons.  No doubt they'd get pestered on his behalf about stuff that has nothing to do with his work.

I appreciate that Maya, but saying something like "divorced from german actress and has 9 year old son" isn't giving too much info away and would not expose his family to fan hassle!

At Timeless Destinations convention in Vancouver a few years ago, Michael did us the favor of granting an interview right before he was to fly out to his theater performance of Macbeth. Unfortunately, the interview was supposedly filmed, but the person filming was unfamiliar with the new Hi-Def camera, and the footage was lost.

All I can tell you is he answered some questions about the performance in regards to the 'curse' on Macbeth actors, in that he was not superstitious in spite of the fact that a couple of workmen on the set of the show were injured during the set-up and that there was a tremendous storm during the last part of one of his shows which caused alot of wind damage. Other than that, I have no surviving text or film to document the interview. Angel did the interview, even though it was extremelely shortened due to time constraints, but he was only able to answer a few questions regarding the play. Obviously we were all extremely disappointed in our loss of the footage. That's showbiz...

Maya gets pestered contantly about MM at the email from her MM site.  Some chick even sent a photo of herself for Maya to send to MM.  Maya has every right to not give out any information on MM's personal life.  Frankly, it's nobody's business but MM's, I just posted the bit that's been known for years.  His personal life doesn't need to be in his bio, other than his achievements as that is part of his professional career.

Hey guys, time for me to make something perfectly clear. Get ready for a little rant, so if  you choose not to read, please ignore the post.

Regarding personal information on Michael. I'm not at liberty to discuss anything personal on this board or on the website for a perfectly good reason, in spite of whatever 'demand' there is for private info on him.

1. I have an official site, and therefore am precluded from mentioning anything that I don't have permission for, like personal background info on any previous wives and children. Why would any of that make any difference to anyone if they're not trying to look them up somewhere? What difference does it make if his ex is Canadian, German, Chinese or whatever? And I certainly would NEVER pass any info around about children. Period.

2. I can't sell any items on the site either, like autographs, etc, without express permission.

One of the reasons there is this policy is that Michael is not  your typical kind of Hollywood actor. He's a very private person and doesn't share details of his family, for good reason. He's had stalkers, droolers and all kinds of nutjobs out there that try to hunt down his hotel rooms during conventions, follow him home from the studio, etc. Now if some of you are not happy with the level  of information I'm doling out when I get it, and think you are 'entitled' to more personal information, then you're on the wrong board. And I certainly won't jeopardize the status of the website by doing something that will upset Michael, and I sure won't stand for anyone copping a 'tude about it either, so whoever is unhappy can just get over it already.

This message board and the website have given you guys more information about the cast than any previous site or board in Lexx fandom, and there were days in the beginning of Lexx fandom that just asking about Michael's personal info would have gotten someone attacked by numerous fans with a proprietory interest in Michael who didn't even have any website involved.

I only post info regarding Michael's work because that is the only information that is RELEVANT. If someone is interested in him personally, well you're out of luck here, so if anyone thinks they can get better info someplace else, more power to you.

I hope I've made myself very clear. I enjoy giving you guys details of work and appearances when I have it, but I'm not going to give out anything other than details for his work, because nothing else is relevant to these sites, and I certainly don't want to start avoiding giving information because I think the board members are ungrateful for what they're getting. Trust me, you guys have all the goods that are available.

Now that the public flogging is over, let's get back to having a good day...:)

One of the reasons I joined this forum, and enjoy it so much, is the general lack of 'tabloidy' type stuff. I appreciate that it's about LEXX, and the actors' work, the art, and not about who's dating who, etc. Don't know, don't wanna know.

I know he was mentally deranged, but a statement made by Live Kai in FluffDaddy was quite apt: Fascination with the artist has superseded identification with the art. I think our culture is permeated with this concept. So thank you Maya, Angel, and everyone else involved here, for giving me a place free from gossipy twaddle to express my appreciation and indulge my inner geek. You guys have done a wonderful job of keeping the spirit of Lexx alive.

I hope this comment will be taken the way it is meant. I'm not trying to pour salt in any wounds, or keep an argument going. It is meant very sincerely. I'm new to this and still learning the ins and outs of posting etiquette, so I hope my chiming in on this is not out of place. (Tone can be so difficult to convey in writing :)

Thanks for the compliments you guys, we're trying to make this the last bastion of Lexx information, and sometimes it's just tough to be objective, being as we've been around so long and have had to deal with all kinds of situations. I prefer to just not get any speculation started about anyone, so that it doesn't get back to the subject and cause more drama. :c030a:

there's a farty smell in here ....

but never mind that, what's the latest on the coffee table? I'd like to see an interview wherein maya asks careful questions on its inception and development. perhaps one to two gentle enquiries on sanding and the merits of a good french polish - that sort of thing. of course she couldn't ask the direct questions, like "when are you actually going to be able to put a cup of coffee on it?", but still ....

I'd like to see an interview wherein maya asks careful questions on its inception and development. perhaps one to two gentle enquiries on sanding and the merits of a good french polish - that sort of thing. of course she couldn't ask the direct questions, like "when are you actually going to be able to put a cup of coffee on it?", but still ....

the Coffee Table Project!

can't say too much about it because it's still more or less in development, but let's just say it'll have very smooth edges :D

It IS a well known fact that hospital workers, policemen, firemen, bartenders, etc all dread the full moon. I used to work as a bartender when I was young and we'd moan when we heard there was a full moon coming up, especially if it was on a Sunday, for some reason. People  you NEVER see at any other time will come out of the woodwork and start fights, get drunker than hell, fall down in the street, vandalize property, you name it. Most ER doctors will tell you that the incidents of stabbings, shootings and domestic violence hits a peak during a full moon, along with more house fires and DWI's...:2567:

I worked in retail for 20+ years, and I dreaded the full moon, too.  People really do get crazy(er).  :P

My mom used to work in a mental hospital on the Geriatric ward. Mostly people whose kids didn't want to be bothered with them so they would have them committed. Most of the patients were just plain old not really crazy until the full moon and then they would get stirred up!

And yes 12 years with a police department made me hate working around the full moon too! All the fruitcakes and nuts crawled out of the woodwork!

How about we just keep this thread about Michael's interview and nothing else. I'm grateful he took the time to do the interview and gave us a fascinating insight into the person and the career.

I was very interested to find out what music MM has been listening to, especially with him being a musician as well. I'd not heard of John Zorn before, so went to check him out. Zorn's work addresses many of the same deep themes as those in Lexx.

Curiously as well, Portishead did a short film called "To Kill a Dead Man", back in '94 already.

Life is full of synchronicity.

So THAT'S who kept buying me a free round of that bubbling green stuff that kept eating through its glass and whispering my name back in the old LexxBar days!

The Ripper himself had nuthin' on my towering suspect list!

Back to MM, I read or heard his interview about the obstacles faced when puting on the play Macbeth.

I went to the, Caravan Farms Theatre, web site and was fasinated by it. They have plays and other projects all year around, even in winter.

The Theater project are worked around open fields, meadows, woods and buildings.

I sure would like to visit the place to see how that is done.
And I also would like to know where and how the audiences view the productions?

To do that you'd have to sit in. Access to the site is tough, it's in the middle of nowhere, accessible by small private plane or an extremely long car ride. Performances take place despite inclement weather or cold. Occasionally they post reviews.
