As I alluded to in the little talking…box…thing, I managed to grind out another fanfic when I was a college-aged whelp.  It’s not Lexx-related, but it is a sci-fi story, based on my all-time favorite movie, Aliens.  A friend and I conceived the initial story concept via e-mail correspondence after discovering that we both adored the first two films in the franchise (Alien and Aliens), and utterly abhor the third and fourth films (Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection…Christ, I must have a thirty foot pole around here somewhere).  To that end, we hashed out a basic outline.  Some time later—owing to my fledgling desire to try my hand at writing a novel—I decided to novelize it.  I actually finished the first draft of this story before I began working on my Lexx fanfic, and had set it aside and mostly forgotten about it until relatively recently.

In short: The story is called Alien Redemption.  It functionally omits (or “retcons,” to put it in comic book lingo) the events of the third and fourth films, and picks up fifteen years after Aliens.  It features a large cast of characters—mostly original, though a few familiar faces pop up—and serves as something of an unofficial bookend to the series.  There’s some visceral stuff to be sure, but don’t go looking for blood-‘n-guts on every page; the bulk of the narrative is heavily character-driven, and like Protoblood Brothers, contains a fair amount of what I’ve heard literary critics refer to as “psychological nudity.”

I’d like to invite anyone who is interested in reading it to do so.  That said, I won’t be posting it in this thread…it’s way too long.  Over 160,000 words, to be precise, making it by far the longest thing I’ve ever written (four times as long as Protoblood Brothers, nearly twice the length of any of the “real” novel manuscripts I’ve completed, and at present, 30,000 words longer than all of my existing Lexx episode reviews combined!).  I don’t really feel like chopping it up into multiple posts…plus it seems whenever I cut/paste anything from a Word document into the forum I have to go through and manually alter/redo some of the textual formatting and font settings.  Not a problem for something as comparatively short as an episode review, but for this monstrosity, it would be a nightmare.

So here’s the deal: anyone who wants to read it can hit me up with a PM that includes your e-mail address, and I’ll hit you back with a complete copy that you can read at your leisure.

Word to the wise, though: knowledge of the first two Alien films is absolutely essential, as my story contains a number of unapologetically esoteric references and callbacks.  If you haven’t seen them—or even if you have and it’s been a while—you should definitely give them a look.  Both are masterpieces of their respective sub-genera (horror and action).  Here’s your study guide:

*Alien (1979)  While I begrudgingly recommend the Director’s Cut (which includes a few brief, previously deleted scenes, but also removes/trims a few others…what can I say, Ridley Scott’s insane) over the original cut, either one will do.

*Aliens (1986)  No disputing this one…you need to see the Special Edition (widely available on DVD).  It runs seventeen minutes longer than the theatrical version and includes a number of critical scenes—mostly character-development related—that I make explicit reference to.

Anyhoo, I think you'll enjoy it.  It certainly isn't perfect (Lord knows I'm no Clive Barker or Robert Heinlein...hell on my best day I'm lucky to rank up there with Bazooka Joe), but I had a lot of fun writing it, and remain proud of the finished product.

Are you kidding me? I LOVED the entire Aliens franchise, in spite of the fact that they had Winona Ryder in one of them. I'LL TAKE ONE !!

As soon as I get my grubby little hands on the Hard Copy, I'll dive right in. A story that long deserves a nice comfy chair, a glass of Sherry and some Carl Orff on the cd player...

Ok, after I pried the 30 pound shredded paper-stuffed  duct-taped-to-death envelope out of my bulging mailbox yesterday, I waded through the first 40 pages (double-spaced)  of this behemoth story (TIL 2:30 AM folks) and all I have to say is......

OH. MY. GOD.

Bilbo, you're in the wrong business.  Hang up those dumbells, you need to move to H'Wood and be a screenwriter, you run RINGS around anything I've read lately. I"m currently reading the Charlaine Harris "Southern Vampire' books, of which they made a HUGE HBO TV show around, and her books SUCK (yes, pun intended) compared your writing. A FUCKING TRAVESTY !

I hope you get published on that other work, it'd be a shame that folks out there can't read this stuff.

I'll take me a couple weeks to get through the book since I can't read constantly all day and shut myself up from the rest of the world, as much as that appeals to me at the moment, but I promise to post a more complete review when I'm done..:)

EVERYONE GET A PDF FILE OF THIS FROM BILBO, YOU WON'T BE SORRY !

Well I'm about 3/4 ways through this fic, and all I have to say is...WHAT A FUCKING MASTERPIECE ! Jesus Christ on a cracker, this is one of the best  page-turners I've read in ages. I think we need to either Taze Bilbo or handcuff him and get him to the nearest literary agent...Good lord. And I'm not even done yet.
