Hi guys and girls!

I have just recently watched season 1,2 and nearly finished season 3 thanks to a friend who has leant me his DVD set.  I was thinking of buying my own set but wondered what the current state of things is with home video releases....

My friends set is the Australian release by Force Video.  It is I believe "complete" but for a small edit in season 1 where they cut some Zev nudity - see here: http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Censorship/CensorshipDetail.asp?ID=24809

And apparently the German release is even more heavily edited :(  I can live without the Zev nudity, but I hate buying "cut" DVD's...  so I am wondering are there any "uncut" releases of season 1?

I am also into in Hi Def (Blu ray), and I understand that season 3 + 4 were done in Hi Def.  I guess season 3 + 4 were in wide screen (16x9) ratio? Any news or rumours on a possible Blu ray release in the future?

I look forward to talking with you all :)

BunnyFan aka Darren.

Hey Welcome, Bunny..

As for the DVDs, here's the 411.

NO HD versions are available. W hich is sad really, when you realize that S3 was FILMED in HD in Germany, just not recorded on DVD as such, for some silly reason. S4 was NOT filmed in Hi-Def, it was filmed in regular filmstock.

As for uncut S1 dvds, there are several Ebay sources still selling S1 dvds, BUT they are mostly Region 1. The reason is, it's a Canadian release, and a Canadian company that made them and they are now out of print, so if you want them, in any format, this is about the only way to find them. I hope you can get your hands on a non-region format dvd player, and then you're in business.

Thanks Maya :)

So am I correct in understanding that the Canadian release is not cut in the same way that the Australian release is?

Interesting that they did season 3 in HD and season 4 not...   I wonder what inspired them to do that?

I have a multi-region DVD player so I will keep an eye out for the Canadian season 1, but from the prices I see on ebay it may be a bit too rich for my blood :(

Talk soon,

BunnyFan.

Hi Vartan,

yes if something was filmed on "filmstock" (as in typical "movie" film like 35mm) it is higher resolution than Hi Def home video and as such can be made into 1080p (Blu ray), but I think Maya means that seasons 1,2 + 4 were filmed on standard def digital cameras, which are not like regular movie filmstock, and are strictly "standard def".

Best,

BunnyFan.

Another question (I understand if no one knows the answer :)),

was Lexx filmed in PAL (Higher Resolution than NTSC), or was it filmed in NTSC?

Hi Bunnyfan, welcome to Lexxverse. I assume it was filmed in NTSC since the bulk of it was filmed in Canada. The NTSC format of Lexx is completely uncut, and unfortunately season 1 is out of print and ebay is really about the only place to find it anymore, and the prices have skyrocketed the past couple of years for all the movies.

Thanks Angel,

perhaps there will be a reprinting of the NTSC disks in the not too distant future...  What do you think?

Koch did the release of the movies and from everything I've seen and heard over the years, that's it.

The sales of the dvds abroad and in the US were not stellar, and in fact, in some countries, S3 and S4 never got released in those areas at all. The movies and S2-4 were released by 2 different DVD companies, and not in conjunction with each other.

S2-4 were released thru Acorn, and you can still find some of those in the bigger electronics discount places. S1 was released only by Koch from Canada, and it's not being reiussed. The sales just did not make it a profitable venture to do a reissue, not enough demand. Most of the Lexx fans that want the dvds already have them, and thanks to sites that allow you to download them online, the sales of the domestic dvds have dropped dramatically.

Also, the people doing the production on S3 and S4 were different, and S4 had a MUCH smaller budget to work with, that's why it didn't get a Hi-Def treatement. It would have meant only 13 episodes instead of 24.  Since the Hii-Def wasn't visible in the US anyway, (or on the dvds) it would have been an enormous waste of money to film it that way. In Germany, only a handful of people actually got to see the benefits of the Hi-Def filming. The majority of the viewers noticed no difference.

Wonder why they allowed them to be made available online?

Did the Germans see it broadcast in Hi Def?  Did they get it in the usual Hi Def 16x9 ratio, or did they get it cropped for 4x3?  Wondering what the directors "intended ratio" was for season 3?

Having watched seasons 1,2 + 3 on the Australian DVD's, even though they were all only in standard def, I can say that season 3's video quality is MUCH better than season 1 + 2 :)

From what I understand, they didn't 'allow' them to be made available online, they just showed up that way. Even Michael McManus mentioned having downloaded them from Bit Torrent because he never bothered to pick up the dvds when they came out, and  no one ever sent him a set.

As for the aspect ratio, I have no idea what the intent was, I never talked to anyone in Germany that actually saw any of the episodes from S3 in Hi-Def, and in fact, the only person that might know that information is probably Brian Downey, (that is, if you want to actually TALK to someone) You might try Brian's own board, he answers technical questions about the filming of Lexx all the time.

My DVDs of S3 are better than S2, (anything was, really) but I can't really tell much difference from S3-S4 in quality.

I preferred S1's film quality because it was actually shot as movies instead of 'for television' and the sets and quality of the color are remarkably better. You might have to spring for a set of S1 DVDs just to see the better quality of the production.

LEXX SEASON I - USA EDITION!!! (Pre-Order)

If any of you visited eBay today you may have noticed a bunch of new auctions claiming to be pre-orders for Season 1 LEXX USA Edition. I tracked it down and it appears to be legitimate!! (A 4-Pack that includes All 4 Movies!)

https://www.echobridgeentertainment.com/dvd/Lexx_Season_1_71239

Will Wonders Never Cease!
On their home page there is a press announcement that "Echo Bridge Entertainment is Pleased to Announce that it has entered an Agreement to Acquire ALLIANCE ATLANTIS International Distribution."

I notice there is a picture of Xenia on the DVD cover though it correctly lists Eva as cast.

At the least - I hope this puts a hole in the price-gouging that often goes on for these 4 volumes on Ebay, and may it also give more widespread public distribution to our beloved Epic Series, though it may be too soon to tell if these will begin appearing at such stores as Best Buy.

That's wonderful news, isn't it! It's good to see it being released again at a reasonable price for those that don't have it.
