Has anyone seen Avatar?  (Yes, Maya I know I should have seen it in the theater).  It was on HBO last night, and it was so visually stunning!  The story is the same plot line of indigenous people and the bad guys coming to take away their land/natural resources, but the effects for the movie were amazing!

Yes it was the only movie I paid to see in a theater last year. So sorry you didn't go to see it in the theater. I saw it in IMAX and if you think it is visually stunning on TV, in IMAX it was totally breathtaking.

As much as I'm not a big fan of James Cameron, I had to admit it deserved every bit of the 200 Gazillion dollars it made at the box office. I had to 'build' that 3D movie in the projector computer's LMS when it came out, and it's a whopping 276 GIGS big. Because of the special effects and 3D format, it took almost an hour of programming to get it ready for viewing, what with the special framing aspects of it and the sound modifications.

Highest grossing movie EVER.

Trivia fact: James Cameron was inspired by Roger Dean's artwork for the look of the movie. In fact, in looking up pictures for comparison, I found this article on that very same thing this morning, apparently Roger Dean thinks the movie mimics his artwork as well:

I'll hunt down some pics and post them for comarison..

A bit late, since it has been about a month and a half since I saw them - but first two films I went to see here were Di Renjie and Reign of Assassins - and I loved both.

Both have kind of a nostalgic vibe to them, as Di Renjie is in its best moments totally HK-new-wav-ish and Reign of Assassins has some of the humor and mood of oldschool flicks and Gu Long's novels...
In any case - both recommendable.

(I actually liked Di Renjie *so* much that I bought a DVD when the mood to rewatch it overcame me - knowing all too well that I am wasting my money on a camrip ----internet connection here is not the fastest or most stable one, so downloading can be complicated...)

I just got back from seeing "Black Swan." Easily one the best movies I've seen! It's a perfect psychological thriller and it's portrayal of one young woman's descent into madness is truly amazing... and haunting!

The role of a lifetime for Natalie Portman, and she nailed it right on the head! I always thought she was an okay actress, but this takes her to another level entirely! She deserves whatever awards come her way - and I think it's going to a fair number of them.

Dark and disturbing - Not at all a chick flick ballet movie... ;o)

MAYA! MAYA! MAYA!

Remember we were talking about just this subject the other day? They're gonna make a movie out of it!

Sources close to the production are reporting that Guy Ritchie has been approached by Warner Brothers to take the helm on the project, now titled Xerxes, and will focus on the character, who, as fans know, is the Zoroastrian king of the Achaemenid Empire.

Rodrigo Santoro is the god's name.

I went to see "The Rite" starring Anthony Hopkins and was pleasantly surprised to see Rutger Hauer in it, as well.  It was a smaller role - he plays the father of the seminarian the movie is centered upon - but he was really very good, as usual.  :)

Eww. I'd rather watch 2 hours of Xerxes doing administrative paperwork than endure more Spartans Miller style.

:beat_hea:Ok, so... Soldier's Girl. I didn't expect much from this film because technically it's a TV movie. It was made for Showtime, but when I hear TV movie all I can think of are those smarmy and overly saccharine Lifetime-type movies. This was not one of those at all. This film is based on the true story of Army soldier Barry Winchell, who falls in love with a transgendered woman, and the consequences of their relationship. What I really liked about this film is that it was told like a love story, which it is. It's about two people who love each other for who they really are, not what they are.

I found the performances very genuine and moving. The three lead actors were amazing. Shawn Hatosy plays the main antagonist, and does so very believably. He played it just right; a bully who is himself confused and damaged.

Troy Garrity plays Barry Winchell, the main character. He was completely committed and I really believed that he loved this person, and that it wasn't just lust, though that was there, too. He came across as sweet and simple and brave.

Lee Pace plays Calpernia Addams, the woman Barry Winchell loves. Lee Pace, who is 6'3", and gangly, plays a woman. Not a drag queen, not a caricature of a woman, but a woman. And he does it with softness and vulnerability. Somehow, his big hands, Adam's apple, and broad shoulders didn't matter. I forgot about all that after a while and he just became the character to me. I completely stopped thinking about it being a man playing a woman.

Anyways, this film really affected me and I wasn't expecting that. People put so many restrictions on love, on who someone should love and why. So many rules for something that is inscrutable. It is so sad to me that when two people manage to find a little happiness that other people can't just let them be. So now I'm feeling gloomy and you get to pay the price by being subjected to this review (and a tiny rant). :u055a:

You're welcome. :c030a:
