I LOVED this show for some reason..hm...maybe it was the premise...

Let's see, a group of criminals and misfits escape from the Concentration-camp like planet they're on rather than face  a trial and certain execution, along with a gorgeous, dark, brooding, morally ambiguous and unemotional (male) hottie, a couple of girl warriors who have dubious backgrounds as thieves, etc, and wind up in a talking, sentient space ship that gets itself into all kinds of trouble , visit weird planets and everyone drools over the dark handsome guy..

Sound familiar? No?

Never heard of this show....hmmmm, maybe because it was never on TV in Germany?

Does someone have closer insight on this show?

The show was a UK show, made about the same time as the 'Tom Baker' series of Dr. Who, cheesy sets, silly costumes (except for Paul Darrows, he wore LOTS of black and silver) and inane dialog, but the actors did it all with a straight face and you couldn't help but get sucked into the great storyline. Tons of eps, and it's available on DVD in Australia, but not in the US...Timeline was the 70's...maybe that's why it's not familiar...

I was totally addicted to the show When it aired on PBS back in the day. Like Lexx, the final episode kind of ruled out any possibility of a continuation - at least with the original characters. Blake and Avon's final encounter took care of that.

And I do believe the last scene is the only time Avon (Paul Darrow) ever smiled in the entire series!

I loved this series too. Although when someone initially told me that Avon (Paul Darrow's character) would become the main character, I almost quit watching. I found Avon to be a difficult & abrasive character at first. Always arguing with Blake. GADS!. But he did turn out to be an excellent lead. Frequently right in his assumptions, BUT GAWD HELP YOU WHEN HE WAS WRONG! No-one could be as 180 degrees off target and totally screw up everything like Avon :D

The series was really great, but I just couldn't buy into the last ep! I thought it really sucked the way they ended the series.:fear2:

I saw them on Amazon.com and they were pretty expensive, but if you check on Ebay you might be able to find a good deal on them . You can buy the individual series or the whole 4 series set, but that's pretty expensive. I loved that they did alot of extras, and remastered the series, and did bloopers...

I might have to talk myself into getting them if I can justify the cost, hehe

They've just had a series on cult Brit sci-fi programmes -  half an hour where the actors writers & production peeps look back...last night it was on Blake's 7. Most enjoyable to see some clips! Apparently it started out as Robin Hood in space, but then moved more towards fantasy, much to the disappointment of Gareth thingy, who played Blake. They showed the ending, too - decisive or what!

I've been hearing a lot about this, and not having caught Blake's 7 yet, I'm curious. Tell me if I'm getting this wrong, but it seems like Blake's 7 is a kind of ancestor to all the "un-Star Treks" we've seen over the years.

Interestingly enough, though, Paul Donovan never mentioned it. He talks quite a bit about film when discussing influences on his concept--Dark Star, Alien, Monty Python, etc..  (See for instance, the interview in Writing Science-Fiction Television.)  Additionally, Brian Downey just the other day wrote on his site's message board about how Lexx absolutely did not refer to or imitate other SF shows, instead doing its own thing.

Naturally, I'm curious as to thoughts about fundamental differences between the two shows. (One that struck me: I don't think anyone would ever characterize Tweedle as Robin Hood in space. And anyway, even the last vestige of the heroic rebel went at the end of series 1, after which it was a very different game.)

Blakes 7 was sort of an anti-Star Treck. The Federation was a corrupt negative influence, not unlike the Cluster. But Blakes 7 was a much more about adventure where Lexx was about humor.

I'm surprised Paul Donovan didn't mention Blakes 7 or his character Avon at all. He did write a book "Avon" some time after the series ended. The book was about his character's backstory.
