We finally had some good light today so we took Cody(my 15 month old son) down by the lake to take pictures of him in his Halloween outfit.  Hope you like them and yes he gets all of his good looks from his Mother . . . . . .

The dragon decides he needs to build a nest!!

Like salmon, the dragon decides to build his nest near water.

The dragon begins to collect dead/ dried grass and starts building a four foot nest.

Nest building continues . . .

The dragon is done with his nest and leaves to find a mate.

Can't find a female dragon, so Mom will have to do.

The fearsome dragon and Mom/ Michelle walk down to the lake to watch the sun go down.

Then the dragon got his bath and went to bed.

The end . . . .

He's absolutely adorable.  I remember him even before he was born, seeing the sonogram pictures and now he's 15 months old!  He's really growing up, and such a handsome young lad he's turning into, thanks for sharing your pictures, Straight Arrow!

Chowing down after a powerlifting meet, circa '04 (my face isn't normally that red, for obvious reasons, and my hair nowadays is well on the way to looking like Plif's).

I think yer all luffly! I'm very displeased with myself at the moment, so I can't share a recent photo without the worry that I might insight a riot, make infants cry and/or cause nations to crumble... catch me in the spring... that said, I think there is still one in the pets thread... ~_^  :s010a:

A little more up to date.  For the record...

a) Yes, I'm always that pale...takes anywhere between ten and fifteen minutes for me to get a sunburn

b) For the life of me I cannot account for the stupid looking grin on my face, nor do I have any idea why the hell my head is cocked like that

c) What you are seeing is not a big-money optical effect...my head really is that freakin' big

I had a half German friend begin to tell me what was being said, but then I made him stop. I just wanted to enjoy the CD after all, and knew that I'd never remember anyway! :D I can curse in German, but that is about it... heard it somewhere, then started to say it when I was annoyed and it turned out to be a real word heh heh

You know what, I love reading and writing in English and wouldn't write stories for our rpg, adult stuff and such things in German. Don't know why... ;-)

Ha...you think that's something, you should see my brothers some time.

That's 615 pounds; a little less than three times my bodyweight.  It's a weight range I'm fairly comfortable with, and I was none the worse for wear after doing it.  I could actually deadlift quite a bit more when I was in college, but those days are behind me (and I'm not exactly pining for them).

Got family related bidness to see to that week...maybe next time.

You'll have to trust me when I say there'd be little to no artistic merit in such an endeavor (not to mention the guy who took the last set of pictures would probably balk at the idea).

Just to put it in perspective for you, the world deadlift record for a guy my size (220 lbs) is 901.7 pounds (409 kilos), and the overall world record is 1003.1 pounds (455 kilos)...I've yet to lose a wink of sleep over the knowledge that I'll never be able to move something that big without the aid of a forklift.

To take it a step further, the women's world deadlift record is 683 pounds...that's Cluster Lizard strong right there.

I too have dumbbells (hope this is the right word, had to look into my little English dictionary ;-), but they are sooo small and I only use them for putting them on my feet, doing a little gym for my fittness every evening...  ;-)

That's why you'll still be up and walking long past the time when all the cartilage in my joints has turned to dust, confining me to a diesel-powered Rascal electric scooter for the rest of my natural days.

Here's my Andy-Warhol collection that I did 5 years ago with my webcam and some arty programme that came with the PC :D

One of me with crazy Kai eyes and fangs (that I couldn't keep in). I was drunk at the time :bounce_pinka:

Just got back from a few days R 'n R in Evergreen, Colorado (spitting distance from Denver, in the foothills).  Here follow some of the less humiliating pics:

You morning people disgust me.

Feverishly debating the pros and cons of a graduated flat tax with my cousin's youngling (for those who can't tell at first glance, I'm scared shitless right here...first baby I've held in about thirteen years).

My first topknot...damn thing exploded somehow.

Surveying my future kingdom twenty minutes or so before a totally humorless park ranger read me the riot act for innocently asking him if I could fish with dynamite.

For some reason, some old hippy left his dog tied up outside the lodge.  The guy was a jagoff-and-a-half, but me and the mutt developed quite the rapport.

A rare still frame from my little-circulated audition tape for Sideways II: The Merlot Massacre.

THIS  IS  SPARTA!

(Somebody tell Ketana I'm only doing this once)

I see you managed to pick up a Sasquatch while on holiday (first pic) I hope he's housebroken...

Wasn't worried about getting bitten (although she did damn near rip a fistful of my hair out the first time I got too close to her) so much as the fact that I'm a klutz and she has yet to figure out that if she rolls out of my arms it's going to hurt like hell.

mayaXXX wrote:

Alas, no...I don't plan on moving any time in the near future (although those plans could change in a wink if some good-hearted editor would fork over a Stephen King-sized advance).

sabeanqueen wrote: It looks absolutely gorgeous there :)
Not to mention a helluva lot cooler/less humid than my regular stomping ground.  Heat index today was 119 degrees...thank God I got off my ass a while back and put some freon in my car.

CheshireKat wrote: LOL nice pics. Hope you enjoyed the neighborhood while you were there.

Relished every second of it...it was the eight hour drives hither and thither that had me grinding my teeth to fine, bloody nubs.

Oh, and I'm feeling a wee bit egotistical, so here's another one of these (that really is as dark as I get...any longer in the sun and I'd look like a lobster slathered in napalm):

You could always slather self bronzer all over yourself. :wink3:

Do you go the whole 50 yards as a power lifter and eat raw eggs, eat lots of beef and drink alot of milk?  I know someone that is into that and that was a daily staple for him when lifting.

To a point.  Strictly speaking, I don't train as a powerlifter any more, and for that matter, didn't technically train as such when I was competing.  Hardcore powerlifters concentrate almost exclusively on the three core competition lifts--bench press, squat, and deadlift--and while I still hit those as hard as I can, I've always favored a more well-rounded program, incorporating explosive Olympic-style lifts (clean and jerk/snatch) and elements from my old football workouts, in addition to a few bodybuilding staples (although I'm not a bodybuilder and have never strictly trained as such).

That said, while I don't intricately measure everything I eat, I try to be as smart about it as I can.  I'm not really looking to put on a great deal more bulk, so I don't load up on excess calories, though I still eat a helluva lot more than most people I know (excluding my two younger brothers, both of whom make me look like a friggin' stick figure...).  My primary concern is protein, as the general rule of thumb says that anyone serious about weight training should try to consume at least 1 to 1.5 grams per pound of bodyweight a day.  That equates to anywhere between 220 and 330 for me, which means I'm no stranger to copious quantities of chicken and fish (got a sweet spot for shark steak, although that stuff is expensive as all hell), and it goes without saying that I down a couple of protein shakes a day.

Supplement-wise, but for creatine, which I used intermittantly in high school and college, the only supplements I've ever taken long term are whey protein, which I just mentioned, and glucosamine, which is a joint lubricant.  I've never been within a hundred feet of steroids, HGH, or any of that crap (in spite of the fact that I was tested five times while I was playing college ball, while a couple of our hot-shots who were known juice-heads were always conveniently excused from the proceedings)

Sure, if you want to wind up being twice my size.  Seems everyone I've ever trained for any period of time shoots right past me after a while.  Let's see...I got both my brothers into it, and they can both throw me around (one of them's only 16!), one of my sister's friends came to me when he first started working out...he plays in the NFL now!  I could go on...

Back from Nova Scotia I'm already beginning to miss it. I had a great time, met a dear friend and had luck with the weather...

Wow, it looks beautiful there. Did you meet up with Brian Downey or Nigel Bennett? Brian wrote on his board about the Atlantic film festival just happening and that he saw Goblin there.

No, unfortunately the Atlantic Film Festival started the day we left Nova Scotia. So, I didn't get the chance to see Brian and Goblin again.

I almost never post pics of myself on the web, but I ran across this old baby pic of me. Judging by the date I was about 18 months old and I think it was probably Easter.

'Sup.  Part of the reason I've been so inactive lately is because I've spent the last two months training for an amateur strongman contest to benefit a local children's cancer ward, so in addition to slaving away at my regular job, training pretty much became my second full-time gig.  The event was yesterday.  Despite this being my first strongman contest ever, I wound up taking second place in the middleweight division, which earned me an invitation to the NASM championship later this year (last year it was in Las Vegas, so, fingers crossed and whatnot).

Anyhoo, my local paper was there along with all the spectators.  If you want to read about it, you can click here:

http://cjonline.com/stories/021008/lei_245553919.shtml

For whatever reason, the results board listed me under my full name...probably because that's how it appeared on the entry fee check that I wrote.

In addition to the article, one of their photographers was there snapping off pictures, some of which I'll post here.  My brother also burned off a bunch of pics, as well as some video footage.  When he gets it to me I'll post it too:

1) Warming up on the axle-press (you can't really tell, but that bar is 2" in diameter, so I could barely get my little china-doll hands around it)

2) Axle-press.  We had sixty seconds to do as many Olympic-style clean-and-press reps as possible.  (On a somewhat related note, the guy in the background in the white shorts and black tank top is the biggest human being I've ever seen).

 3) 600lb deadlift (not the best form, but I got it)

4) Wheelbarrow load and carry.  Had to load five sandbags, each of which weighed 200 pounds, onto a massive wheelbarrow and push that godforsaken rig sixty feet.

5) Another load/carry pic.  The guy in the white tank top was one of my training partners, and also plays arena football.  This time next year he'll probably be in the NFL.

6) Moving out

7) Eyeing the finish line.  I completed the entire course in 26 seconds, which was the best time of any of the day's competitors, and a full eight seconds faster than my best time in training

8) Last event.  Towing a 12,000 pound wrecker

9) As if this truck wasn't big enough, the damn thing blew a tire earlier in the morning, so it was like pulling a giant sled.

10) Not a one of us were able to pull this beast the entire sixty feet.  The furthest anyone got it was twenty-four feet.  I got it to about seventeen and a half.

11) Gutting it out for a few more inches (I have massive welts on either side from that harness).

12) Longest seventy-five seconds in recent memory.

13) Just pry out my fillings and toss me in a ditch!

14)  The John Rambo business casual look.  Yeah, I look ridiculous...but when you're dead tired, sore all over, and smell like a paper mill, you think little of it.

The girl behind me who handed out the medals had cancer when she was only eight years old.  She is now a senior councellor at Camp Hope (and even sang the national anthem to open the show!)

We raised a couple thousand dollars for the camp, plus we got them quite a bit of publicity (the contest director took out several newspaper ads and a TV spot leading up to the show).  I'd never even heard of Camp Hope before signing up to do this show, so we're hoping word-of-mouth drums up further support for their cause.

I woke up a little sore, but really no more so than after a really tough workout.  It's all a matter of knowing how far you can push yourself...and knowing when to take it easy.  For example, I'm taking this entire week off from training (...which means I should have ample time to whip up an episode review).

I thought I did pretty good too, considering I'd never done a strongman show before (just powerlifting, which is confined only to gym lifts) and basically came out of "retirement" to do it.  Still, for as well as I did, I came away humbled, because the kid who edged me out for first place in the middleweight division...well, he really is a kid.  Only seventeen years old!

2008 NEBRASKA'S STRONGEST MAN
7/12/08

1) The contest kicked off with a roll call of all the lifters.  It rained all night and into the morning, hence the sweatshirt (although there's simply no accounting for the ridiculous looking head-bob that my sister somehow caught me doing).

2) First event: Axle press.  We had three opportunities to Olympic-style clean and press as much weight as we could (with the rules stipulating that once you miss an attempt you are eliminated, so we had to be smart about how much weight we used).  What makes this event particularly difficult is the size of the bar...it's two inches thick, which is far thicker than a normal weightlifting bar.  It's a miracle that damn thing didn't go sailing right out of my little china-doll sized hands.  First rep = 260lbs (notice the totally involuntary Elvis-like lip curl...I have no earthly idea how I did that)

3) Second axle rep = 280...felt easier than the first

4) Third attempt = 300lbs...this damn judge got in the way quite a few times throughout the course of the day...I don't know how my sister restrained herself from flinging the camera at his head.  Anyhoo, I took second overall in this event (the guy right after me put up 320, which is just a bit too rich for my blood...at least right now).

5) Second event: Keg carry for distance.  For this event we had to pick up a beer keg full of sand and carry it back and forth along a sixty foot course as many times as we could before dropping it.  The middleweight keg weighed 270 pounds.

6) Because we had to bear-hug the keg, it became harder and harder to breathe...basically we were asphyxiating ourselves!!!  The reason most people dropped the keg wasn't because their grip gave out, but because their breathing became shallower and shallower to the point where their legs began to cramp up from lack of oxygen.  I don't think they designed this event with asthmatics in mind.

Nonetheless, I put boot to ass on this event, taking that godforsaken thing 249 feet before my legs finally gave out on me.  In the long run, this is the event that won the contest for me.

7) It was a relief to be rid of that thing...and a further relief to have another big guy standing by, just in case I needed somebody to catch me!

8) Third event: Farmer's walk.  Each of those weighted implements weigh 270 pounds, for a total of 540.  The object was to pick them up, carry them down the sixty foot course, around a cone, and back again, for a total of 120 feet.  This event was timed...not that any of us were moving too fast with those things.

9) My legs and back were perfectly comfortable with the weight...it was my aforementioned china-doll hands I was worried about.

10) The single worst part of this event--and probably the whole day--was the turn.  It's extremely difficult to execute a crisp about-face when you've got a quarter-ton of steel dictating your momentum.  Slow goings to say the least.

11)  Nearing the finish line.  As you can see, my hands were ready to call it a day (pretty sure I could hear the left one calling me a son of a bitch).

12) Event four: Sandbag carry and load.  This was another timed event.  We had to load a series of increasingly heavier sandbags onto a 48" platform as quickly as possible.  The bags were spaced out on the ground at five foot intervals, and weighed 200, 250, and 300 pounds respectively.  I was able to load all three, although not quite as quickly as the guy who went right after me.  Unfortunately, this event zipped by so quickly that my sister was only able to get one action shot.

13) Final event: Medley.  This was actually three events in one, similar in execution to a shuttle run.  We had seventy-five seconds to make three trips down and back the sixty foot course carrying a different heavy/awkward implement each time.  This is the first implement, called a yoke.  It weighed 600 pounds, and was surprisingly easy to carry (notice how low to the ground the base is...I actually forgot to have them lower the bar height for me!!!)

14) Medley phase II: Once the yoke stage was cleared it was on to the duck walk.  250 pounds of weight suspended from a chain with a "T" shaped handle on the end.  The event gets its name from the awkward, waddling steps competitors are forced to take because of the shape of that miserable thing (there's that damn judge again).

15) Medley phase III: The last stage of the medley was a sled drag.  450 pounds of weight piled on a small metal sled, which we had to drag across the asphalt via a chain (the chain was ridiculously long, so unfortunately the sled itself wound up getting cropped out of the picture!)

16) Nearing the finish line with the sled.  Could barely feel my left knee at this point, so I tried to focus as much of the weight as I could on my right.  By now I was ready to lie back and let them shovel dirt on me.

17) I wound up taking the day...by a mere half a point!

And wouldn't you know it, the trophies were shaped like kegs (which may or may not qualify as irony...I'm going to need a ruling on that one).

Here are some of the pictures my brother took from last week's strongman contest.  I actually almost didn't compete in it.  The week before when we were demonstrating the car deadlift for our local paper I wrenched a nerve in my lower back (likely because the footing we were on was really uneven, although it might have something to do with my wanting to impress the stripperific--though chronically disinterested--photographer), which means I was forced to watch the Super Bowl lying on my back on an icepack.  From Sunday through Wednesday I actually had the promoter scratch my name by the list...but then come Thursday I felt a little better...and then Friday I was quite a bit better.  And while it was, admittedly, a dangerous move, I couldn't bring myself to drop out when I felt that much better, so I decided to do it at the last second.  Wound up tying for second place out of fourteen middleweights, in what was hands-down the toughest field I've ever gone up against.  And after that...you guessed it, more ice!

Anyhoo, here are the pictures:
.ExternalClass .EC_hmmessage P {padding:0px;} .ExternalClass body.EC_hmmessage {font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;}

1) No expenses spared on the advertising budget.  I suggested we rent a giant spotlight (never mind that it was in the middle of the day) or a portable billboard promising everything from top notch tax services at reasonable rates to free beer.  As with most of my really good ideas, my friends looked at me kinda cockeyed and politely declined.

2) First event: Axle press for reps.  Had 60 seconds to overhead press 240 pounds (on a 2-inch thick axle bar) as many times as we could.  This is becoming one of my signature events, as I've gotten dramatically better at it since I started doing these shows, and my 1-rep max is within fifteen pounds of the current lightweight national record holder.

3) In this case I managed to grind out fifteen reps; three more than I ever got in training, and only one rep behind the guy who won the event.

4) And now, to drive a stake through its heart so it can't come back.

5) Second event: car deadlift for reps.  This is that event I was doing in the paper, although we used a much nicer car and WAAAAAY better footing for the actual contest.  Just like before, we had a minute to do as many complete reps as possible.  I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the actual amount of weight I was pulling was a little north of 600 pounds.  I wound up performing 25 reps, but only 22 of them counted (twice I missed the "down" command from the judge, and once I didn't touch the damn thing all the way to the ground).  Judging by the hue of my face, I'm guessing Kyle took this picture near the end.

6) I can't even begin to describe what my back felt like after that, but I'll try...imagine some steroid-addled baseball player used your lower back for batting practice, then kicked you out of a speeding bullet train onto a pile of jagged cement cinder blocks encased in ice...and to top all that off, you slept on it wrong!  Not exactly paradise, but to be honest I felt better after that go-around than I did the week before, when I was legitimately injured.

7) One of half a dozen people who helped me stay in one piece.  Kyle didn't get any pictures of it, but when I wasn't warming up for one of my own events I spent most of the show lying on my back on the cold concrete with my shirt hiked up.  Aesthetically appalling?  Absolutely.  Did I give a rat's ass what anyone in the crowd thought?  Can't say I did.  Hey, whatever works.

8) Third event: carry and drag medley.  60 foot course.  For the first leg we had to carry a 240 pound keg down the course (you can see the keg there between the two guys in red).  For the second half, we had to drag a 150 pound iron sled with a motorcycle on it (the bike probably weighed between 300 and 400 pounds).  I'm not sure what my time was in this event.  It wasn't the best, but I'm pretty sure it was in the top 3, because it moved me into a tie for first place.

9) Just...just start shoveling dirt on me...

10) By now you could have broken rocks on my lower back, stiff as the muscles were.

11) Final event: keg load.  Had 60 seconds to load five kegs (weighing 220, 240, 260, 280, and 315 pounds) onto a platform.  This was my best event in training, and I put up some absolutely blistering times at the gym.

12) Unfortunately, with my back in turmoil, I was about half a second slower on each keg than I needed to be.

13) Me and the guy I was tied for first with wound up canceling each other's scores out, allowing another kid (the axle record holder I mentioned) to slip by us and take first while we tied for second.  I can't complain in the least...he's a badass and put on a hell of a performance.  But I believe if my back had been at 100% going in I would have taken the gold.  Eh, shit happens...

14) Another day, another shiny lil' paperweight.

*************************************

And because I'm a complete doofus, here some pictures from my gym's Myspace page that I dressed up when I was fooling around with paintshop:

Bilbo, you look like you're about to give birth to Alien in picture number two.  Is there enough ice in the world to numb your back after an event like that?  So is there where all the guys go to compare testosterone?  I may just have to show up at one of these events......   Anyhoo....Congrats on 2nd place!  It looks like alot of painful fun!

Those narcissistic moods sometimes bring somewhat decent results...
Been fooling a bit with the camera in order to take mugshot of me usable as a Sina avatar...

DFG was right, my hair was mid-brown... Until today...;-)

And - hopefully - that's enough of me till I get a new hair color or something...:-)

(None of them looks like me and yes - I am hiding crooked teeth...;-))

After reading your latest Lexx episode review, Bilbo, I really don't think you should be allowed around sharp objects.  Man, I'm jealous yours is bigger than mine!  :c030a::s010a:

Pictures from my brother's wedding this past summer have finally started to trickle in.  At this rate it'll be Mayan doomsday before I have them all (not talking 2012 here folks...I'm saying Maya will drop her cover and finally make her play for world domination).  For starters, here's one of me (smiling ear-to-ear, as you can plainly see) and my cousin's three-year-old:

Kid was terrified of me the first day I was out there...after which she did a comlete 180 and latched onto my like a vice upon deciding:

a- I'm funny (at that age, a guy balancing three cups on his head is nothing short of the pinnacle of human achievement)

b- more importantly, she can use me to get things, knowing that I have no authority over her whatsoever.  Wise beyond her years, this youngling is. Hmm.

As for the picture itself...I had been walking around the reception with a flower in my hair for about an hour or so (...do you even have to ask?).  At some point she saw it, decided she wanted it, and so when I was kneeling down to retie my black licorice shoelaces for the umble-teenth time, she yanked it right off my ear (mussing my hair to the point of no return...which was a moot point, as shortly thereafter I unhitched my tresses and started headbanging on the dance floor).  I spent a good five minutes trying to get that cursed carnation exactly how she wanted it...then she got bored and tore ass out the door to go chase hummingbirds.  Or maybe she had a sixth sense about where they stashed the remainder of the cake.  In either case, she was ahead of the curve.

So, this is where we unveil ourselves, eh?  Well, here's a webcam shot of me... It's my current profile picture on Facebook.

And this is my baby Joxer... He just turned 12.  I never got married or had kids, so Joxer is my "son."

I also have a Hermann's Tortoise named Gabrielle, a Crested Gecko named Boga, and a Betta fish named Fox.  :)

I'm kind of camera-shy since I've had so many mugshots taken. The lighting is always horrendous and intentionally done to make you look like Nick Noltle's bastard half-sister.

What is really nice is that they have varying nicotene levels from Etxra high to none so you can actually smoke without any nicotene at all if you want.  I haven't Smoked a 'real' cigarette since Early yesterday and I don't miss it at all.

Glad you don't miss reg cigs Abby. If nicotine was the only things you had to worry about I don't think cigs would be all that bad. I think it's all the other chems the companies put in them that are bad. So hopefully this will help keep more money in your pocket and keep you from having health issues later on. Enjoy your "crack pipe" lol and keep posting about the flavors your trying. It's fun to hear about them.

August 25, 2010 was the last time I puffed on a 'red dog' aka Marlboro red. Just quit cold turkey. Some days it's hard, some days I don't even think about it. E=cigs to me are a cheat. You're still doing the act of having a cig in your mouth and pulling on it.

It is a good compromise, methinks.
If you cannot or simply will not quit completely, this is a good way of somewhat decreasing the negative impact on your and (more importantly) other people's health. Also smells much better...:-)
(Doesn't look quite as sexy, though.)

Though to anyone who actually does want to stop smoking I'd recommend *my* method (lollipops - loads of them; preferably sugar-free). It worked perfectly for me...:-)

You have been found guilty of failing to pay money owed to the temple. You are therefore sentenced to have your individual life terminated. However, His merciful Shadow will allow many of your vital organs to live on as components used in the making of robotic drones. Your useful flesh will be contributed to the protein bank where it will be recycled for purposes that serve His Shadow (flicker) poses that serve His Shadow...

Got myself caught in the middle of a rather cool time paradox.
...
I really want a sonic screwdriver.

For me, personally, getting brutally murdered by my own (or rather my character's) father on Friday, getting drunk and debating about the benefits of physical exercise and occasional self-harming on Saturday, and running around wearing the 4th's scarf (borrowed from the 11th) were this particular convention's highlights. And the kick scooter, too.
(A pity Tenth left all too soon, despite being the one supposed to not want to go; I really wanted to borrow that screwdriver.)
